I found the reversing sensor ecu/control box.
It's in the spare wheel well held on with 2x10mm nuts.

Have a look at the socket, there's a micro switch in it and its gets pushed in when the trailer is attached, they some times stick in.

I tried that and couldn't see a switch looking into the socket so I assume I have to open it up. It is a 13pin socket not a 12N or 12S

I don't think ESP was fitted as standard to the 1.6 petrols.
