The handbrake only auto applies when you switch off the engine. It won't auto apply when you stop at a junction etc.

I have changed the switch and still it is the same.
I thought driving it forward and backwards would have released the brakes, but it has not.

Sounds more like the actual switch is failing to me and cleaning the guides won't do anything.
