Rally Japan

Day One

Petter Solberg has not won a round of the world championship since Rally GB in 2005 but all that could be about to change after the Norwegian completed the opening day of Rally Japan with a lead of almost 10 seconds in his privately-run Citroen C4 WRC.

While that might not represent a huge advantage, Solberg has battled a fever throughout the day, which he admits has masked some of his pace.

“It has not been easy at all today,” said Solberg. “I am feeling a lot better than I was but it’s very strange when you don’t feel okay and don’t have the energy you need. Now I need a good night’s sleep to sweat out the last bit [of fever]. The car is working very well and we have had a good pace and a good performance today so I am happy. I know there is more to come from me.”

Mikko Hirvonen completed the opening loop of three stages today in fourth overall but an upturn in pace in the afternoon has enabled the factory Ford Focus driver to leap to second, 9.4s behind Solberg, courtesy of two stage wins.

“It’s worked really for us today,” said Finn Hirvonen. “I didn’t want to go too fast too early so I’ve been building up my speed slowly and it’s starting to be pretty good. We have to see what we can do tomorrow. I didn’t change anything at midday service, I just went for it because the others were doing that too.”

Sebastien Ogier is third on his first Rally Japan. He is also the leading works Citroen driver after team-mate and title leader Sebastien Loeb lost significant ground cleaning the road of the loose surface gravel on Friday morning.

Ogier, who held the overnight lead after going quickest on both of Thursday evening’s superspecial stages, said: “To be racing to be in the lead is very good for my first visit to Japan. The road has been very bad this afternoon so it has not been easy. For this reason I am very happy. The car has been perfect but we made some changes to the set-up to adapt it for the rougher stages in the afternoon.”

Loeb, meanwhile, suffered a broken front damper to add to the delay he suffered running first on the road. His road position remained a hindrance for the afternoon tests due to the ruts that had formed following the first pass of the three gravel stages.

Jari-Matti Latvala, who is fourth in the second works Focus, reported making two small mistakes on stage seven. “I just got confused with my notes on a few occasions and ended up braking too early,” he said after completing day one 15.4s off the overall lead.

Dani Sordo completes the top five in his Citroen Junior Team C4 but was left to bemoan a gearbox glitch that struck during the afternoon.

Henning Solberg is seventh with Stobart M-Sport team-mate Matthew Wilson completing the top eight. Federico Villagra is ninth in his Focus, 16.6s clear of ex-Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen, who spent the day adapting to the challenging gravel roads around host city Sapporo.

Sorry but another question about parking sensors........

I have searched but not found the answer to my question.

Do the C4 models have the necessary wiring to the desired location on the parking sensors i.e. The looms are all the same and terminates at a specific location for a number of models, and then the ones which have parking sensors have a small additional loom which connects them to the sensors?

Or for aftermarket sensors (and the control unit), you have to intercept the reversing lights power wire and a negative from the rear light cluster?

I just wondered if the Citroen loom already had the necessary terminations in a connector hidden somewhere in the boot (like I remember some fords for tow bar wiring) to save actually having to alter the original wiring.

???

De-wiper guide

well this morning i decided its time the little t**t of a wiper had to go... pahhh not as easy as you might think !!!

tools needed:
torx 15 screwdriver
spanner set
indestructable hands (or a towel)
drill
drill bits
blanking grommet - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
ViewItem&item=150488438062&ssPageName=ST
RK:MEWAX:IT

1: open boot and remove the screws in either side boot closing hole (pretty easy!)

2: pull of boot backing where you have just removed the screws, it will be pretty easy just give it a good pull, the clips are quite large and wont break easialy - if it doesnt move wiggle it about and it should come free

3: close boot - pull open the base of the wiper, this will present you with a nut, this will need to be removed.

4: this is the point you will need a towel - wrap it round your hand, grab the wiper and give it a damned good twist, its been out in the elements for a few years so it will be seased on, once its moved wiggle it and it will come off the wiper bar

5: now come the problems, you will need to remove the white plug from the wiper motor - done

6: there are 3 screws holding the motor onto the boot door, as far as i know these are riveted and will need to be drilled, be carefull at this point as dont forget you are drilling above your head and little shards of metal wont be nice in your eyes or mouth (should wear safety goggles but were impatient) - yep they have to be drilled!!!

7: about done now, plug up the hole you have left with a 33mm bung

8: you will need to find a small plug for the washer hoze, no one wants that going all down the inside of the boot once its all back together!

9: replace all interior parts give it a good push there should be 4 clips that go in...

10: admire your work !!! have a beer !!!

this will be updated with pictures once ive finished

C4GP Speaker door/dash crossover, amp and speaker questions

Hi all, and thanks for any input.

I want to change my speakers and put an amp in. The main question I have is regarding the signal to the doors and dash. I have a component set of speakers which have a dedicated crossover; full range signal into the crossover and separate signals to the midbass/tweeters. I've used the midbass before in my previous car and because it was already crossed over in the amp/HU I didn't use the crossover and it sounded fine. So can I do the same in the C4GP?

Regarding amps. I assume there isn't an amp in the car now... just he head unit, so there are no pre-outs available in the car? My old car had an amp but the signal from the HU to the amp wasn't compatible with normal pre-outs so I had to use a signal converter out of the amp to get pre-amp signals. I'd like to skip the last step if possible, obviously.

Regarding the speakers in the dash. I assume they aren't 3.5" like a lot of cars, but maybe just a tweeter? I haven't gotten the grills off to check. Any tips as far as grill removal goes?

Thanks again,
Peter
