Hi

My 2005 2.0 HDI (85k) VTR has been having a couple of problems lately.

A few weeks ago the engine management light appeared on the dash indicating that troublesome De pollution Fault. This was fixed by the dealer replacing the air inlet temp sensor.

In addition, leading up to and after the sensor was replaced the car has a hesitation around the 2000 rpm mark. I am aware of the various threads on this problem but today something major happened on my way in to work...

...Given that my fuel economy is poor (39 mpg avg on motorway) and the engine hesitations were still apparent I decided to give the car a blast thinking it would clear some kind of clog(?). In third gear I applied full throttle and hitting 4000 rpm caused a significant drop in power followed by erratic engine revs, engine over-run and an ENORMOUS exhaust smoke plume (fogged the two lanes of the dual carriageway!)

I repeated this on my way home and the same happened. This time, due to the engine over-run the car accelerated with my foot off the pedal. This loss of control is clearly quite dangerous.

Looking at the threads I believe this might be something to do with the EGR valve but I can't be a 100% sure. Is anyone able to confirm?

Thanks

It could well be the EGR valve but your injectors could well be on the way out as well. This sort of thing isn't uncommon with 2.0HDis of your vintage.

A visit to a diesel specialist will probably be more productive and less expensive than a visit to a Citroën dealer.

Thanks

Just found seen the price of fuel injectors - wow! £200 for one!

Hoping its just the EGR valve!

If the engine is revving without you applying the accelerator, you need to get it seen to as a matter of urgency. It's possible it's you've got diesel in the oil, and that the engine is able to run off this mix into a diesel runaway condition. Can be caused by failed injectors, blown turbo seals etc. This is where the engine uses the oil as it's fuel source.

This is absolute worse case scenario, and is generally turbo related - but if this does happen the advice is to pull over, clutch down, handbrake on, footbrake on, put the car in 5th/6th, pull the clutch out quickly to try and stall the engine. May come in handy to know.

Thanks - yes it certainly seemed it needed some urgent attention after all that smoke.

If it were the injectors, is it possible to identify and replace the one at fault or is it a case of replacing the whole lot?

It's going in to kwik fit tomorrow, keeping fingers and wallet crossed!

Not a good idea. It really needs to go to a diesel specialist as BJD says.

Not recommended for sophisticated diesel work. Find your local diesel specialist who's dealing with this engine all the time.

Ran it into Kwik Fit in hope but as you say, not much help.

Interestingly the guy at Kwik Fit mentioned he had seen similar problems on Volvo engines which caused some crashes due to the engine overrunning problem.

Booked into a diesel specialist for Tuesday!

Just a final note on this, and sadly the car has come to the end of its life...

The diesel specialists were great so thanks for the recommendation. They test drove the vehicle and the engine over ran and caused the engine to run into the red - they managed to kill the engine though. It left the car sounding not quite right! They disconnected the turbo to intercooler pipe and a litre of oil poured out!

A full diagnosis began (removal of engine!!) This identified turbo failure, con rod warping, injector failures and the cylinder head needed overhaul! Price tag of approx 3500.

With an 05 plate and 85k miles, it was a no brainer but to have the car scrapped.

I am sure this could have happened with any other manufacturer and/or diesel but have now moved away from Citroen and diesels due to the experience.

The 2.0 HDi has a known problem in that the injectors start to leak, diesel contaminates the sump oil and the level rises to the point at which the turbo starts to suck oil from the sump and self feeds, which it sounds like yours did.

Once that happens the engine is usually destroyed and fit for nothing but scrap as you have found out.

Your not the 1st to have the problem and won't be the last either.

Anyone with a 2.0 HDi needs to check the oil level at least weekly for any signs of diesel contamination, oil level rising and get it sorted a.s.a.p. if it happens.
