Hi everyone. Looking for advice on the repair of my wife's C4 Hatchback. The clutch is starting to slip and needs replacing. Could anybody tell me if the clutch can be replaced with the engine in the car? If so does the starter motor have to be unbolted as I am not sure if it is bolted to the gearbox bell housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. John.D. |

Thank you for your reply. I have everything stripped off ready to pull back the gearbox from the engine. The only thing I have not undone is the starter motor. This, as you know, is hidden down behind the back of the engine and is very difficult to see. ( You have to use a mirror! ) The box and block do not seem to want to come apart and my guess is that the starter motor bolts are what is holding things up. I was hoping that someone might have replaced a C4 clutch and could advise me. I hope to remove the starter bolts tomorrow and if succesful will let you know if the job can be done with the engine in situ. Thanks again. John.D.

Yes - it's a starter motor off job (which in itself is a hell of a fiddly job!)

My clutch was replaced with the engine in-place, only the gearbox was removed (obviously). Takes about 8 hours. |

Yes - the only current Citroen that needs the engine out for clutch replacement is a C-Crosser.

Thank you very much everybody for your comments. I can confirm that I have managed to fit a new clutch to my wifes C4 hatch with the engine in the car. I can also confirm that it would have been much easier and quicker if I had removed the engine and box together !!!!! It is extremely difficult to see some of the parts and much, much harder to remove them. All through my life I have maintained all of my, and my wifes, cars. This has been the most frustrating and difficult clutch fit I have ever done and would advise anyone who has to fit a clutch to remove the engine and gearbox from the car in one lump. Just to remove the starter motor would try the patience of a Saint !!!! Be warned. COLVERT. |

BigJohnD wrote ... Full marks, Colvert! Thank you for your reply. Have just one more question. To fit the new clutch in my wifes C4 I took off the slave cylinder. Somehow whilst it was off it seems to have managed to get some air into the system. I now need to bleed it but cannot find the clutch master cylinder reservoir !!! Does it share the brake reservoir ????? If not then Citroen have made a really good job of hiding it. LOL. |

Well it doesn't share the brake reservoir. It took some tracking down but here is how you do it: - Click Here - (for Premier Members) You basically have to 'siphon' fluid in. Looks like a pain to do |

Looks like a pain to do Thank you for the info. which I have downloaded and printed.Like all things Citroen it is hard to understand. My wifes car is the C4 VTR PLUS HDi. (Vin No. VF7LC9HYB74328701 ) Right hand drive. The information seems to be for a left hand drive car. When I look up under the dash inside the car I can see what looks like an actuating rod going in and out of a horizontal master cylinder. Very much like you would see in most cars. The info. is confusing because it says remove the undertray and steering ball joint as though to give access from the bottom but also says remove the air filter housing as though to give access from the top !! In the engine compartment, in line with the clutch pedal inside the car, there is a black plastic housing with two pipes coming from it. One is a small diameter pipe exactly like the pipe which is joined to the slave cylinder. The second pipe is twice the diameter and has a braided cover. (They both travel across the bulkhead from the offside of the car towards the nearside. ) I assumed the small pipe is the one that the fluid goes through to operate the clutch and the large pipe is from the reservoir which I just cannot find !!! That is why I asked if it was the same reservoir as the brakes with an internal divider. I am a bit lost with it at the moment having changed the clutch assembly and now on the last leg of the work I can't find the reservoir. LOL. ( Incidentely the two slave cylinders in the pictures are different to one another in the way in which they are bolted on !! ) Will renew the search again tomorrow. COLVERT. |

When I do find out how it is done I will leave a post to help other people. COLVERT. |
