Differences between auto gearbox and EGS gearbox? |

Fellas Here in Aus we only have the 6 speed auto box option and in the manual, it shows the 6-speed electronic gearbox system (with R, N, A and M settings on the lever) and the automatic gearbox option (with P, R, N D and M). What is the difference between them - both have paddles, both are 6 speed and both are electronic by their nature? Just intrigued as what the differences are, who has what and whether it means anything? Thanks Andy |

Onto this is bolted a changing system which moves the selectors. The clutch is a standard friction clutch, although with a dual mass flywheel. It is operated by servo like the gearbox. A standard auto gearbox is a completely different type. It is an epicyclic gearbox which operates using brakebands on each speed. The 'clutch' is hydraulic and allows slippage. The differences are: EGS will not 'creep', auto will. EGS does not have the power-sapping hydraulic clutch, so fuel consumption is better. Read more here: - Click Here - |

In terms of feel when driving the difference is that the traditional automatic has a hydraulic torque converter which smooths the transmission between gear changes whilst the egs box does not. EGS takes a bit of getting used to as you get power interruption when, for example, it changes down on a hill and for a smooth change up you need to lift the throttle momentarily at about 2000 rpm. Also whilst a traditional auto box is less efficient than a manual box the egs box will return about 7% better fuel consumption than a manual, and also learns your driving style and adjusts change points accordingly. |

When I first got our car with the EGS I could definitely feel the gear changes. Now, especially after about 30 MPH, I really have to pay attention to feel the gear change. It has either loosened up, improved or learned my driving style over time - we have about 16,000 km on the car now. | ||||

Hi, I'm looking forward to getting my new GP in March (1.6HDi VTR+ Kyanos). What intrigues me about the 'learning' EGS is what happens if two people with different driving styles regularly drive it - does the car go schizoprenic? I wonder how these work out as hire cars! |

I wonder just how intuitive this "learning" gearbox really is. What period of time does it "remember" and what if you mostly drive as economically as possible but occasionally need to blast out of a busy side road junction??? From my experience, no matter how I drive, it seems to change gear when it wants and that never seems soon enough for me, hence, I use the paddles to change up a lot... |

As I understand it manual gear changing is recorded and a weighted average is used so that recent changes are more significant. Citroen say that driving the car in manual mode for a few days is the quickest way teach it your style. | ||||

Hi. I have had my C4GP for about 15 months now the learning system in the EGS gearbox can be quite good and usefull but it can also be a pain in the rear end if you suddenly switch from high speed driving to crawling round town it tends to get the gear change points messed up for a while ( when plod is around you pull away and it hags in first and second it has an unwanted effect) The fun part of the EGS though is jam the loud pedal on the floor just before it decks out you will feel a switch that wakes the old EGS box up ok they dont afr change quick then ![]() |
