I have watched all the reports from coupe guys going on about fitting the VTS 'Sport' spoiler (or sometimes the WRC one) to there cars is a must

The biggest comments seems to be 'cost' I can get one from 'eBay' cheaper and yes you can, but I wanted to put it into perspective and add details of changing the appearance of the Hatch/Berline black tail spoiler (yes they do have one that carries the high level stop lamp)

When I bought my C4 there were only a handful on the road and I went months without seeing another. Now there quite common in the North East so decided it was time that mine looked a bit different (and have a bit of an experiment for other members)

So I bought one from eBay (Stuey, you reading this ) for £59.95 + £11.75 postage so a total of £71.70 - Click Here -

It comes 'primed' and ready to paint and does sound 'cheap', well it doesn't actually work out that 'cheap' if you can't pain it yourself.

I got quotes from 2 body shops and both said £70.00 to paint it as the primed finish was poor and it needed work to get it right but........ it also really needed the original 'black' spoiler painted as well to blend in (the one in the picture on the right for example isn't), for another £50, so that brings the total to £191.70 for a small change/addition to the car

Before I started, the spoiler looked like this:

So I unbolted the spoiler (4 nuts and 3 clips to remove) The nuts came off easily but left the spoiler attached by the hidden clips, inevitably pulling the spoiler off broke all 3 Once removed I took off the stop lamp and took both bits to the body-shop for painting

It's easy to do but requires un-clipping the interior trim first to access 2 of the securing nuts.

The diagram shows the fastenings:

Once painted the 2 parts require 'bonding' together and need to be left 12 hours to set.

Then I refitted it in reverse simply using the 4 fixing bolts. I didn't bother replacing the 3 broken clips though as the spoiler is secure enough held by the bolts.

Anyone buying an unpainted spoiler needs to be aware of painting costs. They aren't cheap I'm afraid and maybe you should think about investing in some equipment if your planning any other body kit work.

Once painted and re-fitted the result is:

So £191.70, 1 day in the paint shop and 12 hours for the 'bonding' process to fit a Hatch spoiler against around £180 for a Coupe one that comes pre painted, ready to fit with upgraded struts and can be done in around 30 minutes, not much of a bargain was it?

What the effects are going to be on the water that used to run off the old spoiler down the rear screen during rain, I won't know until I'm out there, so will update things later.

I got it from eBay but it came from Car Styling Emporium - e mail 'Harold' e mail icon and ask if they can ship to you, it's not very heavy, so shouldn't cost that much.

CIT do the same one but it is more expensive from them - Click Here -

Yes but painting costs are a pain and not sure whether to actually change them for these:

Rub strips not the side skirts BTW

I saw the spoiler "in the flesh" on Monday. It looks very nice. Along with chrome additions and those "green eye" inducing wheels, your little putt-putt is starting to look as good as it goes. Quite like the alternative rubbing strips.

Well painting the spoiler cost £120 and expect the rubbing strips to be £70+ depending on how much preparation is involved

Correct me if I am wrong, but I get the impression that although there are a few coupe spoilers out there, there appears to only be one for the hatch, which is essentially an extension of the existing one. (this would appear to be a fairly decent sample of them - Click Here -

Now strike me down lest I blaspheme, but it can't be because of the shape alone, as the Focus if a similar(ish) shape, yet that would appear to have a range of several more substantial rear spoilers. Any reason why there are no others? I don't want anything chavvy or boy racerish, but something that stands out as saying "spoiler" instead of "roof-lip" would be quite nice, considering the coupe lot get to have so much fun.

/ducks for cover after comparing a C4 to a Focus

I fixed the original, anyway it's still more expensive than I paid even if it is 'on special'

I have seen one other style I think for the hatch, but they are few and far between.
