Yes, strip, sand, fill, paint and laquer the wheels (that's the process) yourself to save the 'Professionals' labour charge but get it wrong and they will look worse than when you started.

Alternative, find a used wheel in better condition from a breakers yard or eBay.

I have just applied Auto Glym Wheel Protector to my wheels. It is supposed to prevent brake dust from forming on the wheels and other muck and dirt. First time I have used it so I will post the results after a few days. Being Auto Glym I'm confident in it being a good product.
