My C4 HDI VTS has recently started displaying the STOP message "Engine oil pressure too low" for a few seconds and then goes off. It happens usually when the engine is warm, 2 or 3 bars and on the thermostat and when braking so the car is leaning forward.

Does anyone know what this could be? The engine oil level is fine, I have topped it up to the max line.

Could be several things from faulty sensor to failing oil pump or crank bearings. I think you need to get this investigated quickly.

There is a big difference between 'Low oil level' and 'Low oil pressure'

Whilst it's more likely a failing sensor, it really needs checking out a.s.a.p.

A failing sensor is more likely. Low oil pressure is more likely to occur when the engine is idling. As the rengine revs, the pump pumps harder, increasing the pressure, so turning off any warning.

But do get it checked.

As people have said get it checked out, but it is most likely a sensor or connection, if a wire has snapped or connector become un-connected when the engines hot it expand's thus disconnecting.

I have been having the same problem for the last few weeks now - has anyone been into a garage and had this investigated full, or been given an answer by citroen? Also if this is a common problem/fault is the responsibility on citroen to fix it?

What did the dealer say when you took your car in?

If your car is still under warranty, then there's little doubt in my mind your dealer will attend to it. And if it isn't, you still need to get checked pronto to prevent any damage.

I got the oil pressure low warning light yesterday. topped it up and it seemed fine. Then it happened agin last night. Turned my car on this morning and it didn't happen... but guess what, it's happened agin since. Intially happened after a long run. Had to park on a verge with passenger side higher so wasn't sure if that was the issue? It hadn't happened before so not sure what to do?

Low oil pressure is potentially serious. I would recommend an early trip to the dealers, particularly if it is under warranty. It may be as simple as a faulty sensor.

After having the problem on my car I finally got it back to a the dealership and repaired on warranty. The problem with mine was the vacuum pump on the turbo system. I also had the two engine codes displayed when I hooked it up to the computer:

P2562 - Turbocharger Boost Contrl Position Sensor Circuit
P0299 - Tuebo/Super Charger Underboost

Mine used to do it only when braking, so when the car was pitched forward. Either get a engine code reader or down to the dealer.

I have just encountered the same problem, a few weeks ago the low warning message came on, I turned the engine off and checked the oil which was fine as the car has only been serviced a few months ago.
The problem went away until yesterday, when I drive there is no warning. It's only when the car engine is running idle.
There is no other symptoms engine noise is ok and car runs as it should.
My C4SX 1.6 is an 06 plate and has only done 26000 miles.
Someone mentioned I should change the oil and filter and it will reset but somehow I dont believe that.

How much do you reckon it would cost to get the sensor changed and do you think my problem is likely to be that?

Thanks in advance.

I have had the same problem on my 1.6 petrol, it was the spring in the oil filter, an oil and filter change should sort it!

Engines have (well, certainly used to have) a pressure relief valve. This would allow oil to flow back to the sump when the oil pump was producing too much pressure. They used to fail occasioally on BMC A series engines, often due to weak springs or poor seating. Could that be the issue here?
