Well...

The car put on a turn today (C4GP 2.0 HDi automatic) - wife got home telling me the car had been carrying on. Anyway, I was in a rush to go out so I didn't really listen.

The car wouldn't start - it said the gearbox was faulty and the service light was on. I turned it off then on and it said the gear box was faulty and the handbrake was faulty. It then started squealing and telling me to put it into park. It was already in park. It did not want to play at all.

I rang Citroen assist and reported the error messages. The lady very politely asked how I knew the gearbox was faulty and how I knew the handbrake was faulty. I had to explain there was this screen in the car that reported these error messages. I had to explain this a number of times.

She went and consulted with someone then came back and told me to release the handbrake. I then explained the electronic handbrake.

She said I would need a tow and, because it was Sunday, and all the dealers were closed, they would send one over tomorrow.

A few hours later I went out to the car and it started as if nothing was wrong.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I would guess a sensor in the gear shifter.

The 'full auto' - (not EGS) gearbox is not all that common in the C4 range so you may have to await a reply on this

'Citroen Assist' BTW is not usually staffed by Citroen specialists. It's farmed out to people like the AA (Automobile Association) or RAC (Royal Automobile Club) in the UK (whichever charges least probably) - don't know who it will be in Aus but they will be a national breakdown service provider

So when you call them chances are they really won't understand the issue as it again is likely to simply be a 'call centre' operation staffed by people with little or zero mechanical knowledge

Sorry I digressed

As you say sounds like a sensor issue somewhere, but if it's an 'intermittent' fault, it may take some tracking down

Just to close off on this thread - as I reported in the gearbox faulty and loss of transmission thread - the problem was identified by my local dealer as a software issue. They re-loaded the software and the problem has been fixed. Took only a few hours from when I dropped off to when I picked up.

Cheers,

I had similar problems last summer on this
The dealer reinstalled a while new software system - but then by the time I got home, the car just clunked stop and that was it
It took 3 weeks for them to replace the gearbox selector - so far more than just software. Looks like you got away lightly!

Hi there,
My car is Citroen C4 Picasso 2.0 with automat gear. Today I've got a message on the screen "Gearbox faulty". I can start the engine but unfortunately can't switch from Neutral to A1. It's Friday's evening and Citroen technical service has been already closed. Citroen assistance told me that they only can tow the car to Citroen's garage having service probably on Monday next week.
Does anybody know what could be the most likely mistake? May I repair it self or only at the Citroen's garage?
Thanks in advance.

Is this full auto or EGS?
