Hi all , I'll just post this here in case it helps someone . When I selected A on the selector the display would flash A1 and return to N. It wouldn't selector R or M either. Sometimes if I left the car for a few minutes it would then selector gear properly, but over time the issue became more regular. I removed the selector switch , its straightforward to do, pop off the top cover and remove 5 torx screws. Pop off the connector and thats it, theres a youtube video I'll post afterwards. There's also another video on repairing the pre 2013 selector switch and it shows how to open the switch and remove the pcb. The newer model switch is slightly different but the method is the same. In my case I found that on the reverse side of the pcb there are 4 optical sensors, by moving the selector switch these sensors are blocked by some c shaped groves attached to the switch and this us how the gear is selected. I blew some compressed air onto these optical sensors to clean them. The video regarding the older unit suggested that dry solder joints could be an issue. But the newer sensors are better secured. Anyway after a quick clean of the sensors with compressed air , I reinstalled the pcb into the switch and put it all back together and its working perfectly now.
I've posted a photo of the c shaped plastic unit which blind the optical sensors , and also a close up of the optical sensors on the pcb .
