Just over 6 months ago I began to get "Faulty Handbrake Message" (C4 Grand Piccasso) which then went on to say ESP faulty. I noticed that the hand brake did not go on automatically when this message was displayed. This would be an intermittent fault and did not affect driving the car. I took it to the garage and they could not get it to through the error message nor were any faults recorded.
Recently it has been getting worse and as soon as the message comes up it now goes through a whole lot of random error messages and more worryingly the side lights do not go off! I have to disconnect the battery every time I park it. Help!!

If they cant read it, then it means that error is not stored in engine ECU, and they are using some generic code reader. Error is probably stored in ABS ECU. Error can be caused by faulty handbrake switch, or brake pedal switch. Those trigger ABS/ ESP/handbrake fault. You need better diagnostic tool, to pinpoint issue. I assume it is handbrake switch since it is not disengaging handbrake on command.

agree diagnosis with better tools should show this up. However considering you can get a new non oem handbrake switch for less that 15 GBP and next day delivery on places like amazon you could just change it to see - the other things that is cars seem very sepeptaive is dirt causing back contections - so even removing the switch and replacing it might actually assist her (a bit of contact cleaning in the plug even better).

Its a 5 min job to replace the switch on the top of the dash

Many thanks for your posts. Am I correct in assuming this switch is also causing the front sidelights to be on permanently?
