Hi. I have a DS/4 1.6 HDi diesel from 2016. I need to replace the battery. There is a sticker on the terminal to refer to the manual, and it says something about special specifications and a workshop visit being needed. Is there something special I need to be aware of with this car, or can I just replace the battery myself like I would on any other car? Maybe something with the computer that would be affected? Thanks | ||||

This is on the forum somewhere. I should have saved the URL but I only copied the text. Stop start hasn't worked for a while on my just over 4 year old DS4, I suspected the battery. Took a bravery pill and a new AGM 096 battery and did the following. Turned everything off, auto lights etc inc. Wound down drivers window and shut door and also opened bonnet. Went for a cuppa to give the car time to shut everything down. Took off air cleaner cover and fuse box cover. Removed cover on top of battery to reveal lots of wire connectors with fuses. Fiddled around and found two (three?) clips that released them. Unclipped main power lead from battery. Undid 10 mm nut that released cable from fuse cable array that allowed it to be moved to the right a bit (as you look at it). Then pulled the plastic cover over the battery forward and up (sharp tug required) and it will slide out forwards. Now its a long extension and 10mm socket and undo the bolt at the bottom of the battery left side as you look at it to release the battery. Then undo the post clamp with the same socket and extension at the back of the battery and lift off the terminal (bit of a fiddle). Now pull the battery forward and up and its out! Put the battery back in in reverse but leave connecting power until the last thing. Then its BSI reset procedure. Connect power. 10 seconds later turn on sidelights (or headlights) without opening the door a few seconds later turn on ignition by reaching through the open window. Then the internet info varies. I then started my car. All worked perfectly. Some sources say turn off ignition and then back on and start, no idea which is correct. Reset clock time and date and thats it. I don't see my DS4 being that different to others but it is a fairly intimidating procedure for a first timer so make your own choice about getting it done for you or not. After a short drive my stop start now works every time whereas it wasn't working at all before. I am sure the battery would have gone on for some time in normal use but these newish AGM batteries do seem to have a shorter life and cost a lot more than the older lead acid type of batteries. |

If your battery is the original from 2016, then it's not got long to go. Modern batteries have a habit of just failing, and usually at the most inappropriate moment. And once they failed, they never recover more than about 40%. A professional battery check will give max capacity and max cold cranking amps. If it's under 50%, time for a new one. (I've learned that the hard way!) |

Thanks both for your helpful replies. I bought the car in 2018 so I'm assuming that it's the original battery, and due for replacement (engine wouldn't turn over, but I was able to jump start the car with no problem) Nielp, you're right it is does sound complicated so I will investigate the cost of the battery and the cost of getting it done professionally and then decide. Incidentally, the stop start has not worked since the car was about 3 years old. It seems strange to me that the battery has just failed without warning, but maybe that is a characteristic of the modern AGM batteries? |

I have a stop/start Skoda these days and the signs that the battery was failing was seemingly weird things like the bluetooth link, the cruise control and proximity sensor (i.e. non essentials) not working. Then when it was -2°C in Snowdonia, there was just enough in the battery for some slow cranking and the engine fired up. I got a new battery at ATS in Bangor. I phoned ahead to make sure they had the correct battery - big 'un for an auto diesel with stop start. They did all the re-setting, and it was (and still is) fine. Cost me around £180 IIRC. |

Thanks. Further investigation suggests that the computer has to be "coded" for the new battery specs. Is this happening automatically when the BSI reset procedure described by Nielp above is done, or is it something that has to be done manually, or by connecting a tester? Thanks |
