Damn! Next door neighbour's fence has come down on our C3. Very nasty crease on near-side wing. I'm sure my insurance company will pay for the damage, but I don't want to pay a £400 excess. I hope his house insurance will pay for it. I would like to avoid using my own insurance as I'm sure they would increase my premium.

Claim off your insurers who may seek recompense from your neighbour? Not always good for local relations though.

We will be approaching them, but the gale is still raging and they are out somewhere.

I think you will find that you can't claim on their house insurance. could be wrong though, please let us know the outcome.

I can't claim on their insurance, but they probably can. I want to avoid making a claim on my car insurance.

We had our house broken into and keys for both cars which were in the garage as well as few other things stolen (mobile phone etc) We ended up with claims on both car insurances and the house recorded against us so be careful how you go about it

I'm hoping I don't have to get my car insurance involved, and it will be their policy that pays. The damage isn't severe, and it may be able to be done without a new wing. First thing to do is to get a couple of quotes and go from there.

I've not had any claims or damage since about 2005 when someone hurtled out of a sideroad into our Picasso - which was standing still in a traffic jam. Generally though I wouldn't trouble the insurers for less than £500, even if its deemed no fault and you get the excess back it may well influence future premiums in hidden ways.

It may be that they can claim their fence under their polcy and your car under the 3rd party liability section, but no one is at fault so it might be hard to get anything.

With luck you will get reasonable quotes. I wonder if the 'modern methods' body repairers like chips away can do it. If your local Citroen dealership doesn't do bodywork their service desk might be able to suggest someone.

Got my first estimate. £962. Looks like there will be an insurance claim.

I was going to post a picture here, but the damage really doesn't show in the pictures I have taken. Just got another quote. Remove wing, remove dent, paint and new wheel arrch moulding, £756, same with new wing, £1438. Not much option but to go with insurance now!

756 less your 400 excess, net 356. Only you will know if it is worth the hassle. Or is it 756 plus VAT so your net is £507?

You could call the repair shop and say is the price any different if I pay it all myself instead of through insurer? I suspect they have to go through all sorts of hoops, give discounts and wait ages for insurers to pay them.

B*****ds. Claim happened before my renewal. Just got an email, and they have retrospectively charged me over £90 increase on my current policy. That's a 33% increase.

EDIT: Just had a discussion with the insurance company. Seems that not only do they want a significant extra premium, but it appears that I should have informed them about the claim on one policy on my other policy (the one for the C4GP replacement) and that probably will result on an increase on the other policy. Even if one of the policies had been in my wife's name I would still have to inform on both policies as policy holder on one and named driver on the other. I may well be shopping around for a newcompany after ~42 years.

EDIT 2: £90 extra on one policy, over £100 extra on the other policy. It seems to be 'computer says', no-one can change the policy. Probably not true, someone at a higher level can.
