Anybody know the differences between the different versions of the 1.6hdi engines, ie the hw hz ht hx l know they all have different power outputs, but is the main short engine the same? I’m guessing the output is achieved by the ancillaries turbo injectors ecu etc, or is there fundimental block and head differences?

I can't tell you which codes are which, but early 1.6HDi Picassos were 16 valve engines, later were 8 valve. Also after about 2016 the turbos had modified oil systems. I don't know whether 16 valve and 8 valve versions had the same block.

I wonder why they went back to 8v, maybe an economy or emission thing

That confuses matters more as there's a lot of varients and no 8v. Also what's the differnet between 2.0HDi power levels, the DS4 is 163hp, the one in that list is 138hp |

There was initially an issue with 2.0HDis as they were only available with full auto or EGS gearboxes, and the power/torque was right on the limit for EGS. I ordered the 2.0HDI manual on just about the first possible date in early January 2011, and it was delivered in about 8 weeks; in fact I had to hold it for a few days to get the 11 registration. A bit different to now! |

Slightly off topic, my brother has a 407SW 2.0Hdi, it's a 2007, so also guessing it'll be the 138bhp. It feels gutless to me, needs higher up the revs to feel like you're keeping up with traffic. The DS4 is a beast by comparison, night and day, typically never up to 2,000rpm on the drive to work, 26 miles motorway and town driving. Through the town it's normally nearer the 1,000rpm |
