Actually, oil removal by suction is not recommended on diesel engines by Citroën.

Hi John - who is the author of that documnet, do you know?

The document is from Citroën. It's a page from service guidance to dealers.

Thank you for your reply John. I can only assume that the suction method if not properly done fails to remove all the oil - just as draining the oil via the sump plug in its recessed position also fails to do so. When I owned this car I did contemplate fitting another sump plug in the lowest part of the sump. There was even a video where some individuals pulled the recess down to make a flat sump. I always changed the oil at 9k miles and when the EGR failed (electrical fault) at about 135k it was perfectly clean inside. I fully agree with regular oil changes using the correct oils (and filters). I was just mystified by the insruction not to use suction methods.
Thank you

The DV6 sump capacity is small so even a small amount of used oil is a large percentage. Dirty oil can clog the valves and turbo.

The best solution is more frequent oil changes, and the use of flushing oils with detergents.

Was changing the oil on mine yesterday. The DW10 engine looks to be pretty well designed for draining oil from the sump:

Plus it takes a full 5 litres on an oil change, so less percentage of old oil left.

That'll be the 2.0 litre diesel. The service advice only applied to the DV6 1.6 litre HDi.

I'll have to post a picture of my 2.0l hdi sump next time - a massive difference to yours David. It's plastic, has a 1/4 turn plastic sump plug and if you open it with the recomended 0w Ineo first oil its like water comming out! A positive waterfall with force! I've found it difficult to control so have a shaped 12 litre bucket which I can put very close to the sump before releasing the deluge - got soaked in black oil first time

And - I think the 1.6hdi sump is a badly designed piece of *******

IIRC, it was a joint design between PSA, Ford, Mazda, FIAT and BMW/Mini. The brief was a small, reliable and efficient 1.6 diesel. It does require frequent servicing as a result though.

It's a pity BigJohnD that they recessed the sump plug which meant 0.5 litres at least of dirty oil left in the sump with only just over 3l of new oil going in. When you look at other engines with sump plugs on the curved corner of the sump it would have been a much better solution. The engine itself was brilliant in itself, such a pity this one thing caused so many other issues needlessly.

If you service any engine it will be more reliable.

I think poor design is caused by loss of knowledge as older people retire, young engineers make the same errors of 30 years before. I know that's the same in our industry (high voltage equipment)

Must say I am mystified by the sugestion to buy a new sump - does not fix any issues with the old one. Go on vbru2039 - tell us why! We are all waiting.
