Picked up a screw in the front nearside tyre and went to a tyre dealer to get it fixed. He got me to drive forward on full left lock until he could see the screw, removed it, reamed out the hole and inserted a sticky plug checked it had stopped the leak, pumped up the tyre and I was on my way for £7.00 and 2 minutes of my time.

I thought that plugs were not a legal repair, but these kits are available from lots of places, just have an internet search. I bought a Slime plug kit for £5.00 from a local Motor Factors, to keep in the car. It contains the tools and 5 plugs.

Easier to do that all that faffing about with a tube of jollop, which goes out of date (Mine has!)

As far as I'm aware that type of tyre repair is only temporary.

Tyre needs to be taken off and a proper mushroom vulcanizing repair doing.
£25+ though.

Our daughter is in the process of buying a car to replace the 2011 C3, which has developed a terminal steering issue at 126,000 miles. She chose a 2019 Captur, and on checking we found no spare wheel. We asked if one could be provided and we were told that if one is ordered with the car it is ~£200, but if ordered later it would be over £600 (???). The salesman tried to sell a Gardex treatment, and a Gardex tyre inflator which he claimed is water based and does not ruin a tyre if used. So I went on-line and found a Captur spare, including jack and tyre lever for £170. It arrived today and appears fine. I would never drive a car without a spare if possible, and a new car we have on order will have one. Unfortunately our C4GP is one which cannot take a spare due to the design of the exhaust system. I have a kit of plugs which will screw into relatively small holes (nails or screws) as a temporary plug. I always carry an electric pump. I suppose I have been lucky in that we have never needed to use any plug or spare as I can't remember having a flat tyre for over 20 years. I seem to recall a couple of slow punctures due to nails which didn't need any urgent attention other than pumping up a little. Also helpful are the tyre pressure monitoring systems which can give warning if slow deflation.

I was told that kind of repair is allowed as long as it's not too near the side wall, only on the main tread area.

Not a fan of not having a spare. My last car a c1 had a blow out in the middle of nowhere. The tyre literally tore off. If I hadn't had a spare I would of been in trouble. The can of goo solution is not enough. I have sourced a used c4 alloy off Ebay for £35. It's a dog but will at least get me to a garage.

I'm in agreement with all the responses. My C4GP has no spare wheel, just a can of out of date gloop. When we go on time critical journeys, such as a cruise terminal / airport, I take a spare tyre, just the tyre, which was a 'good' take off from when I last bought new tyres.

The reasoning for this, is that if a tyre is destroyed and can't be fixed at the side of the road, the Breakdown service can take us and the car to get it changed, even when there are no tyre dealers open, or if they are, it's a 'Can get it for you tomorrow' job.

I've never been able to just 'Walk in' to buy tyres for this car.

An issue that caused me problems several years ago. I had a tyre which was deflating very slowly and consistently. I tried soapy water and couldn't find anything on the tread and the valve was OK. Eventually I took it to a tyre place, and they dunked it in a trough of water. The air was leaking from the rim at one point. They removed the tyre and at the point of leak there was a small label on the tyre bead, only a centimetre or so long. The label had split down the middle leaving a small track for air to leak through the middle of the label. Tyre refitted, no more problems.

The whole no spare thing is a different discussion from what kind of repair is allowed.
