I was pulling away from some lights and the clutch pedal stayed on the floor after engaging first gear. I managed to pulled over and had a look under the bonnet - what looks like hydraulic fluid was running out of a rubber gaiter to the right of the engine in front of the clutch. A little while later the STOP light came on the speedo with a warning message on the centre display, which I don't remember the exact wording of but something like brake system fault.

Has anybody any ideas what is the usual cause of this?

EDIT: The brake message was a secondary problem, the first thing that happened was the clutch pedal staying down. Presume brakes and clutch share the same reservoir?

Leaking slave cylinder, replace it and rebleed it.

Hopefully brakes should be ok as they should be taken from lower in the reservoir. If not, more bleeding (though I'm guessing the fluid hasn't been change recently)

The message was probably low brake fluid, which is kind of an important one. If you dont know that then you shouldn't be allowed on the road.

I would certainly suggest you check the brake fluid. If it's low you need to get it attended to urgently. Don't drive it! You will probably need a mobile mechanic to come to you.

If the brake fluid is lying on the ground under the car then I'd call that 'low'
