Are wheel bolts covered by extended warranties? Is 4 wheel bolts safe to drive on? |

Had the ball joints replaced as an MOT advisory. The mechanic who did it claims the bolt sheared off as he was loosening it and reckons it was down to the tyre fitters who had replaced the tyres overtightening/ Cross threading the bolts. Does this sound plausible? Can I claim on warranty for this? Now I'm down to 4 bolts keeping the wheel on to the hub - is that safe? |

Whoever's fault it is, I wouldn't drive far with only 4 bolts. You need to get it sorted asap. I think it extremely unlikely you could claim on a warranty. |

So a 'mechanic' gave you the car back with only 4 bolts holding the wheel on and expected you to just drive away?!! 1 Change 'mechanics' 2 Get it fixed as routmaster says - its not safe |

Do they usually snap when being loosened or at the time of being over tightened?

I think wheel bolts are usually high tensile steel, unusual for one to break, is the broken part of the bolt still in the wheel hub or has it been removed.....or have they just lost one of the bolts when doing the work?

Is it a locking bolt that is damaged?

I have been working on cars, motorbikes and HGV's for over 50 years now, some of that time as a professional and have never heard of a wheel bolt snapping other than in a traffic collision! It must have taken a lot to break one, they are always high tensile as well! |

It doesn't take that much to break them, I snapped one in my younger days, 30 years ago. And I've seen other snap when trying to get them off due to gorillas that much have refitted them. Zero chance of a warranty claim, and possibly your insurance is on shaky ground since it will be classed as unsafe even though 4 bolts will be safe for normal driving. The DS4 only has 4 bolts, probably just as heavy and probably more powerful than the newer ones with 5 bolts. Just buy a new bolt and replace it. They are not expensive. |

Sorry should have elaborated. The bolt head snapped off and the rest is stuck in the head.

It'll come out very easily. Take the wheel off, unscrew the broken bit out and replace it.

They're about £2 each anyway from a dealer - hardly worth worrying about a warranty call - surprised the "technician" involved in breaking it didn't just acquire another. Unless it was the locking nut, at which point you're better off replacing 'em with standards anyway (DAMHIK!) |
