My car has been laid up for coming up for 3 weeks due to the lockdown. I am worried that that battery may go flat. Will starting it and let it tick over for 10-15 min with just the daytime running lights on take out more than it puts in? The battery is coming up to 4 years old.

Just disconnect the battery.

Not sure that will be easy for me as it looks quite difficult to get to and I'm no youngster anymore.

You only need to undo the nearest terminal to disconnect it from the car.

However, I suspect just running the engine for 15 minutes achieves little. It can take over 6 miles to get the engine hot and just letting it idle will not do that - in fact it's recommended that once the engine is started, you drive off ASAP to minimise the build up of unwanted deposits in the exhaust and elsewhere. This will also enable you check the tyres and clean rust off the brake discs.

We were until recently stranded in Florida and were away for nearly 6 weeks. Admittedly my battery is only 12 months old but the car started immediately on our return.

I started my car today for the first time in 5 weeks. It started immediately. The brake discs had a lot of surface rust on them (we live right by the sea) but after a couple of pushes of the pedal, they were fine.

It took just short of 7 miles (over 15 minutes of driving) for the oil temp to reach 90°C - the car (Skoda Octavia) has a digital oil temp gauge.

My son managed to take my car out for a 25 mile round trip to get me some shopping, no problem in starting at all.
