Hi all, first post. Taking the plunge for a used Grand C4 as twins on the way - yikes!!

Narrowed down to the 2015 or 2016, 2.0 diesel, Exclusive+.
Hoping to solicit advice/guidance on the gearbox.

Not sure which way to go, either full manual or the EAT6.
I've mostly driven manuals my whole life but paddles on the wheel have some appeal - I can pretend I'm in an F1 car, with newborn twins and a four year old in the back, god help me, I'll need the escapism!

However, I've read mixed reviews on the EAT6, which include jerky, unresponsive and you have to lift a little during changes. Although I'm confused if it's the EAT6 or the previous style auto before the EAT6 came out, that reviews and forum posts are referring to.

Really unsure which way to go. Can I ask pros and cons of either? What is the general feedback on the EAT6, on this model? They seem far more common than the full manual.

Please can you help me to decide?
Thanks in advance

I have had 2 cars with the EAT6 box, a 1.6 hdi and my current 1.2 Puretech. Both have been excellent with smooth changes, I have not heard of any complaints of jerkiness, the old ETG box could suffer from this problem as it was a piloted manual as opposed to a true auto. I almost never use the paddles, I honestly don't see the point, just stick it D and let the car do the work....I certainly wouldn't go back to a manual again.

The issues referred to sound like they are concerning the ETG (aka EGS) piloted manuals. I don't remember anyone having concerns about the EAT box.

I’ve had the EGS and the EAT6 in my previous C4GP's (2008 - 1.6 litre and 2014 - 2.0 litre models) and have to say the EAT6 was the best 'proper' auto. The EAT6 was smooth, easy to drive and no need for the ridiculous regular reprogramming and sometimes jerky take up of the first 2008 EGS 'box.

So much so, I had yet another EAT6 in my first 2017 Peugeot 3008 and now in my latest 3008, I’ve got an EAT8. Incredibly, that seems even smoother!

The PSA range manual gearboxes don’t get the greatest reviews and are often criticised for being a little notchy.

Although I regularly jump between my own auto and a Hyundai i10 manual, I can tell you the auto is the place I’d rather be!

Do keep us posted.

I have had 3 C4GPs all Auto without any problems. I have to admit took a little time getting use to, but after a day I was fine and don't think I would go back to a manual box. I find it great driving round the Irish roads using the Paddle change when approaching bends without taking my hand off the steering wheel to change gear

If they were all 1.6HDis, I assume they are all EGS, not EAT.

Well that is some great feedback, thank you to everyone who replied. Clearly I have been confused with the reviews between the EAT6 and EGS box it seems.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease, it really is appreciated...

@Iscom, in your post your using the paddle approaching the bend, (I assume to change down?) has the car ever decided to change back up mid bend? Or does it stick with your decision until you straightened it up again, and applied the power?

Please bear in mind my post above. The 1.6HDi was not fitted with the EAT gearbox until the Blue HDi version in 206, so I would suggest that Iscom's 3 cars were/are all EGS or ETG cars. (ETG being the later, slightly modified EGS)

Sorry I thought the discussion was about the pro and cons of Auto v Manual gear box.
Yes I change down when approaching a bend and and continue in the lower gear till I am exiting the bend and change back to 5th or 6th gear when I am back on the strait again but it does depend the degree of the bent and what speed I am doing. I take the view I would rather I change down than the car changing midway the the bend. But if I know there are a series of bends I will go into manual

Righty'o, time to arrange a test drive of the EAT6 !!

I read another thread on here about the Flair being lesser/poorer quality than the Exclusive+.
I've been looking at a 2015 GC4P model, but some 2016 models are popping up in my search. It seems to be the year it switched from Exclusive+ to Flair.

Naturally you'd want the newer car but if there is a quality difference, maybe I should stick with the 2015.

Anyone able to confirm or debunk this?

I used to havea 2015 C4P Exclusive and now have a Feel model (equivilent to the Exclusvive, as near as damn it)and to be honest I have noticed little dfference in quality of build or materials. Sure there are some differences but not enough to stop me buying one.

I had a 1.6hdi in 2007 which my son now has with the EGS box and it was brilliant. I changed to a DS4 with 1.6hdi and an EGS/EGT box and it was the worst gearbox I have ever had. It didnt last long with me and I traded it in for a 2.0hdi 180bhp EAT6 gearbox with sport and snow modes (the first car had sport mode but not the second car) It is really brilliant. I no longer even try to use the manual option as the changes are so fast and smooth I've decided I can't beat the computer controlling them. The next car will be an EAT6 or 8 whatever model I choose.

My original C4P had the egs box, and it was slow to change until run in. Took 9k miles or so until it really loosened up. After than never had any trouble over 7 years ownership. Current ETG box is fine, but occasionally hangs on to low gears in first mile or so when cold.
