So for the last 9 years I have had a 2.0 HDI EGS C4P but it died, so now driving a 1.6 BlueHDI manual. Well here is my thoughts after 500 miles..... 1) The 6 speed manual gearbox is smooth if not hurried, but the gear ratios need to be got use too. 2) 1st and 2nd gear are really just getting moving, when it comes to turning into side streets unless really tight they are not needed. 3) 3rd gear is the most used around town and the car is happy in 3rd from the low twenties till almost 40. 4) 4th gear can be used with cruise at 30mph and you just waft along. 5) As a motorway cruiser 5th is great, 6th can be used but you really need 5th if acceleration really needed. 6) Detest the way the cruise kicks off when the clutch depressed, you may need to move between 5th and 6th! The old egs did this without the need to switch the cruise back on. Oh and the best bit? My average mpg has gone from the low 40's to the low to mid 50's! This is mainly a 15mile commute on the M62/M60. Would I go back to EGS? Possibly not but only because when it goes wrong it really goes wrong and for caravaning it was awful unless on a motorway. |

Cruise control rarely stays active on manual cars between gear changes, I have experienced it once before which I think was on a an Audi Q2 with adaptive cruise control (and it freaked me out!), our old smart worked as you describe the EGS box even in manual mode. I'd be interested to how you find the car towing, torque-wise I think the 'blue' 1.6 is fairly close to your old 2.0HDi EGS but inter-galactic top-gear might be an issue, I know our 2.0HDi 'blue' has a taller top gear than our old 1.6HDi (probably about 37mph/1000rpm in top rather than 32mph/1000rpm) which hampers it a little on anything other than the flat (plus makes solo use in 4th at 30mph equally challenging). |
