For quite a few years we have been required to obtain Umweltzone stickers for our cars if we wish to drive in certain areas of Germany. I was not aware that similar stickers are required to drive in certain areas in France. The requirement applies to both French registered cars and foreign vehicules. At present it appears that the areas affected are Paris, Lyon and Grenoble. The price is £4.80.

In case anyone is interested, the Crit'air scheme is very different to the Umweltzone. In the Umweltzone system you cannot legally enter the zone at any time without the appropriate sticker, and nowadays that will most likely be the green Euro 4 and above sticker. In the French system the prohibition is on particular days when pollution is high, and drivers are somehow notified which vehicles are allowed where. Most of the time at the moment there is no restriction, but I would guess that they may be more prevalent in the summer. How we as tourists would find out where we could and couldn't go is likely to be an issue.
