We're off to Southern Germany (Black Forest) on Thursday in the new C3. I found out yesterday that there are fuel difficulties in France. Normally I have sufficient fuel to get to Calais, then fill with cheaper French diesel, and on the way back I would fill again at Calais. However this time I will have to fill this side then travel on the tankful to the German side of the Rhein. That is ~420 miles, plus the ~80 miles this side. Thank goodness I have diesel, as the range is ~650 miles.

Yes, Mrs FB has just asked me how far it is to our summer French France holiday destination - 480 miles, which with the roof box means if there is a strike on then it's brim it in Kent and then stick to 110 clicks, should do that distance...then hope we could fill up whilst there!

Guys

I also read about the fuel crisis in France and there is an app for both iphone and Android called "Essence Comparateur Carburant" that shows which petrol stations are either working or not. It is map based so looks like it may be useful.

We are going down to Barcelona but I hope the issues will be solved by mid-July!

So we are back from the Black Forest. Car not bad for fuel economy (over 69mpg) but it's slow as a slug uphill. This seems to be due to high 5th gear ratio, a very wide spaced gearbox and no power at all below 1500 rpm. This may be similar if anyone is thinking of buying a C4 with the 100bhp Blue HDi.

For those concerned about fuel in France, there appears to be no real issue, and anyway we comfortably managed all the way across France on a tank of fuel. Looks like 700 miles very easily achievable. Of much more concern to the Germans and the French was the weather. We has no problems where we were but most other areas of Germany were badly hit by flooding, as was Northern France. I don't know whether it made much news here though!

Good to know, our holiday this summer is 480 miles from Calais which I was thinking would either have to be at 110km/h with the roof box on (space for the wine but might fall asleep at the wheel) or forget the wine and roof box then just drive at 130km/h; thankfully you can take 30L of fuel on the Eurotunnel in the plastic 5L containers so I migh just get a couple. I'm working on the principle that so long as we get there how I get back is largely immaterial!

Off to take a C4 Picasso 2.0HDi Exclusive + for a test drive tomorrow - might be back in a Picasso at this rate!

Has anyone got some recommendations for a new sat nav? Budget approx. £100, would be nice to have western Europe as well. Halfords have an offer on at the moment, if you trade in an old unit they give you an extra 20% off. I do have an older Garmin, you can't update it as it has no memory card. Appreciate any ideas.

Is it not worth doing it via your phone? Think virtually everyone has a smartphone now and there are plenty of great apps around. Just need an appropriate mount for it.

I don't use my phone as it chews data - I have a TomTom Live 500 which allows me to connect to live information if I want (using data) - it's very good apart from being slow to boot-up (really slow...) and it still doesn't recognise all your finger-stabbings which is a pain.

You can do Mulsanne, down to Mulsanne corner, up to Arnage via Indianapolis but then as you get to the Porsche Curves the track pulls to the right - ironically the piece of road you drive on at this point is the same as driven on by Steve McQueen at the start of Le Mans - the complex at the start and finish straight is the Bugatti Circuit which is strictly off-limits, but the two Mulsanne chicanes are there in all their glory, simply barricaded off!

The Museum has ta 2CV, HY Variant, SM, M35 and DS in it (along with lots of Le Mans winners!)

We came here in 2012 but it was the day after the 24 so everything apart from the museum was closed down - driving around it's amazing how tight Indianapolis is, for example.

My last tank of derv on the C5 was one where I've been a bit more careful to see what it can do... and the results were impressive! I typically get between 54-56MPG actual. This is the 2.0HDi 163 engine (DW10C).

Figures are from Fuelly - 61.7MPG! Not bad for a giant wagon - and it shows how far the HDI engines have come on. My poor little VTS hasn't been used since I got the C5!

And speaking of fuel efficiency, last week I got the chance to go out and buy a new vehicle
I've never had a car from new, and that's not changed
But I suppose I can't grumble it was a brand spanking new Boeing 787. From starting the engines, to 10000ft used less than a ton of fuel which is astonishing. It may not have been a full load (ok, 4 passengers) but it's a good sign! Well done the team at Rolls - I know there's a few on here somewhere!

The view from 41000ft is quite something eh!
