Found this interesting story. I wonder if similar happens in Europe.

Oh that is nasty, getting the ECU to recognise a test and then altering the parameters so a car would pass.

Shame on VW and another step toward higher regulation and taxes on Diesel cars.

Doesn't say if its diesel or petrol though, not sure how popular diesel is in the U.S.

VW should just do what the local manufacturers do, sell pick ups that are type approved as trucks and therefore don't have to pass any car crash or emission tests, and are therefore dirt cheap.

In 2014 the EPA fined Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors $300m for misrepresenting the fuel economy.

I heard the story on the radio, and I wasn't surprised. I wonder how many other car manufacturers do exactly the same as the figures published for the emission tests bear no resemblance to reality.

An update with apology. It was diesels in America, and apparently it is not currently known whether the same applies in Europe. They are talking of fines up to £16 billion.

The problem with Diesel? have a read of this article (all of it) - Click Here -

The VW issue could just be what pushes Governments into hiking taxes on diesel cars.

Interesting article Dave, nothing has improved with Diesel over the last 15 years. I fell for the hype and switched to Diesel in 2004, next car will be petrol.

Totally agree, not sure why individuals are shocked, just look at the unrealistic fuel economy figures given out by manufactors

Watching the news tonight and VW say it now affects 11 million cars including Europe.

Anyone buying a New car really needs to think hard if a diesel car is for them as residual values going forward could collapse never mind fall.

It only affects the BLU engines. Apparently the volume of urea needed to keep the exhaust clean at normal road speeds would be unacceptably high to the car owners, so they reduce the flow. Citroen, Mercedes and many others now use some form of this technology.

Should I cancel my order for a BluHDi GP, or is this scaremongering?

My guess would be to compare the adBLU consumption on similar sized engines of the different makes. I know that the big trucks use considerably more per gallon of fuel than the figures quoted for cars. Might be worth asking for a written guarantee of on-road exhaust fume.
