 I've had a few odd things happen to our C4GP today. The car was parked on the drive right next to our house. Firstly, the alarm went off three times this morning. As the mirrors were folded in I knew it was locked, but the remote key wouldn't unlock it. But the alarm stopped going off. Later, when I went out to it, it opened OK, but the internal central locker where the electrics are was open, and so was the central cubby between the seats. Then I drove off, and the alarm came up for nearside door open.

All of this made me wonder whether someone had been in it, but I didn't know how. But nothing was missing, and I don't keep anything of value in the car.

So this set me wondering whether someone could gain access when the car was locked. So I left my keys in the kitchen, approx. 2 metres from the car, and went outside and tried to unlock it via the door handle, and it did unlock. I could also lock it again. So, as a warning to others, not only do you have to lock your car, but also you need to ensure that the keys are kept out of the car sensor range to prevent nefarious access.

 Keyless entry and start?

2 metres is a bit further than our Nissan Leaf but there are undesirables out there with code scanners getting access to and stealing high end cars from what I read in the press.

Don't know if it's true or not though.

 I tested this as well when I got my car (showing off to the MIL). I was close to about 2 meters away and she couldn't open the front door. I was half expecting her to be able to do it.

Will test it again.

 Tested mine again, and this was with the keys outside, approx 2 metres away from car, if not a bit less. Got my friend to try the handle and it did not open.

So all depends...I thought 2 metres was an acceptable distance as my car is never parked anywhere in range of the keys!

 According to the Met Police criminals work in pairs, one close to the car and the other trying different locations around the outside of the house. They use some sort of relay system to talk between the car and the keyfob. Put your keys in a metal container. The Met suggest using the microwave as a safe.

The odd thing is that if you take the key out of the car with the engine running, there is an alarm, but the engine does not stop. So you can drive the car as far as you like, as long as you don't stop the engine, in which case the car will not restart. I just wonder whether the software should have been written not allow the car to keep running when the key is removed.

 When we purchased our C4 B78, I bought 2 faraday key pouches from Amazon for about £5. The pouches block the radio waves.

I can put he pouch with the key 🔑 inside, the system remains locked.
