I had too the same issue with my 2012 C4 (129k Km): display message said "Battery charge fault". After a while the mirrors did not fold out anymore from time to time. That was the sign that the car won't start(not even that relay clank). After gently tapping the top of the part, or after disconnecting the plus terminal, the car used to start. Tried to clean the contacts with a contact spray and no result.
Finally I bought a used part (code 9665878280) from Internet and connected the wires one by one. Started the care with no problems.

I have a Citroen C4 2016 (Blue HDI 1560cc 120 Hp) which began to malfunction in early 2023. When I put the key in the ignition and went to start the car I got that fault message, the mirrors didn't move and that was that. .. same problem. I know of at least 3 waiting for months at the local Citroen dealer for replacement parts originally manufactured in Ukraine and currently unavailable.

As described above if you sharply tap the front of the grey unit on the front of the fuse plate sitting on top of the battery this will often correct the problem temporarily.

If that doesn't work what often helps is to disconnect and after say 10 seconds reconnect the positive battery terminal when a faint click indicates that a solenoid switch in the little grey box on the front of the unit has activated and you can start the car.

This gets weirder; some have reported that the fault only tends to occur with the engine cold. Therefore when the first two measures were no longer sufficient I took to warming the grey unit to about 70°c with a hot water bottle or a heat gun gently deployed.

Eventually the unit became more and more resistant and then these measures no longer worked singly or in combination. No new replacements from Ukraine (or anywhere else) are available; my local Citroen garage has at least 3 or more Citroens waiting for a new BMPU so across the country there must be hundreds if not thousands similarly disabled. I discussed the issue with the parts department at my local Citroen Garage from which I had bought the car new but the fellow wanted me to take a day out to take the car in for a plug in analysis costing £130.

I told him I had identified the problem by tapping, listening and applying focussed heat but he wouldn't give me the part number preferring to protect his market.

Eventually I sourced a second hand part which are few and far between, from Spain. The necessary part number is on the back of the unit where mine reads
2016/05/04 S01.01 H5.0 M3.5 407-158-00-00
9800223680 BPGA-01 G10-0022661F01

The second line is the important one. Some generic supplier of Citroen parts to whom I supplied my registration number tried to sell me a different numbered component, I'm sure in good faith, but I wasn't happy and sourced a used one from Spain. The car worked fine for a few weeks and then threw up another battery charge fault although I could continue to start and run the car.

I think the fault led to overcharging, but my battery broke and needed replacing after the charge voltage was reading 15.3v despite a full battery. Rather than spend another £200 on a questionable replacement I decided to cut open the grey unit without knowing exactly where to cut but fortunately I damaged none of the contents and found a little white plastic slide which if pushed gently with a non-metallic wand in the direction shown in my photograph (a fillet of bamboo worked well) it would click the solenoid and allow the car to start and function perfectly normally... until the ignition is turned off again for a while.

I have put some robust plastic tape over the hole to protect it from dust and moisture with an easily grasped flap to allow me to easily repeat the procedure a bit like taking a crank handle to an old-fashioned car.

Although the procedure is a nuisance every time I start the car at least I can use it instead of effectively being off-road indefinitely. With reference to my photo anyone else wanting to try this solution should be able to cut a little window over the white plastic slide much more neatly than my exploratory procedure. The grey plastic is quite soft and easily cut with say a Stanley knife. Bear in mind a new replacement would cost £450-500 when available so take care!

Ah ha!! Finally figured out how to do it!!
I used hot glue to stick a cover back onto the hole over the coil, and tape to allow me to expose the white slide as required.
