The brake switch on the dash became loose and at the same time we started getting parking brake failure messages every time the switch was used. Using the automatic control without touching the switch was the only option. I was confused as to how the car knew the switch was being operated but still ignored it and displayed a fault. Anyway, I removed the switch from the dash and found it to be as fragile as most of the other C4 switches and the joint on one side had snapped off. When I took the switch apart I could see two micro switches which get pressed simultaneously when the lever is operated. I'm guessing that if only one of these switches operates because the lever is broken then the ECU reports this as fault. The diagnostics reported: " C1555 : fault in the activation / deactivation control of the electric parking brake . Characterisation : Short circuit to earth or short circuit to positive" Seems crazy that this is done by design and they couldn't allow the brake to still be released but there you are. I bodged a fix to the broken side of the switch and seems to be working fine now. The car is a 2008 C4 GP. |

Hi Gazfish, did you disconnect the battery when you removed/refitted the switch? I have a new switch to fit, is it as simple as unplug/plug in new switch?

Hi there, I didn't unplug the battery and had no problems. Removal/Install is very easy if you have the same model as me (2008 C4 GP), just open both storage lids on the top of the dash and there's a U shaped plastic trim that just lifts off so you can get at the switch. A single clip holds the switch in place. Once you have the switch lifted clear the electrical connectors has a small lever that releases it. Best of luck, Gary |

Check your battery. Have it done professionally. If it is the original 2009 battery, it is likely to need replacing. Also, find someone with Lexia or Diagbox to identify the exact faults. |

Do you also need Lexia to bleed the brakes properly?

Hi All, We have had a similar fault in our 2010 GP, the dash board handbrake switch became loose suddenly, and would no longer activate the handbrake, we now need to turn of the car to activate it, @gazfish was it easy to replace the switch? or do you have to remove half the dash to do it? Cheers sinkas |

It's easy, You just need to unclip the trim that surrounds the leaver. Open one of the dash top box lids makes removing trim easier. Then you can see all of the leaver and it should be self apparent from there. It's taken me longer to reply to you than it would to do the job! New leaver cost me around £30 |

Have a faulty handbrake on my GP. When you turn off the ignition. the car automatically engages the brake and when you start it up and move off, it automatically releases. But other when that iwhen you press the button to engage the brake nothing happens. The light is continuously flashing for the last few days. Car is on its original battery, about 8 years old, it hasn’t shown any signs of needing replacing. Thanks in advance. !!!

Thanks for your advice. Turned out was a faulty switch and easily fixed. Just plugged out the old one and plugged in the new. Problem solved.
