Hello I have recently purchased a new C4 1.6 E-HDi 115 Airdream Exclusive for delivery in August. The car is already built so I wasn't able to specify the spare wheel option. I have a few questions so that I know what to get to purchase a spare wheel and all the necessary bits, jack etc? I've looked at a few threads but am still a bit confused? Do I have to buy a space saver tyre or will a standard steel wheel fit in the well? Is there part of the electronic handbrake located in the well? What size wheel and tyre would I need to buy. My present C4 has a 16” steel wheel with a 205 55 R16 tyre would that fit? Is the jack the same as on my present 2009 C4. I like the present arrangement where everything fits in a moulded fitting that locates in the wheel well. Would that fit in the new C4 spare wheel well. I have some good condition 205 50 R17 winter tyres would they fit safely on the 17” Phoenix alloys. The tyres on the new car are 225 45 R17. Regards Mike. |

Assuming the set up is the same as the DS4 then I'd speak to the supplying dealer as my usual servicing Citroen dealer (car was bought from motorpoint) sorted all of mine out. From memory the foam that the tyre-gunk sits in is also shaped for the space saver wheel to sit on top (with the gunk compressor removed), so I needed to have the wheel, tyre, jack and cap-removal tool for the bolts; it came to £170-ish. I could have had a 16" full size wheel but this needed a new foam insert to be fitted and they quoted £230 for all the parts and the rolling radius was slightly different so the 16" wheel would sit on the back axle only and be limited to 50mph anyway. |

Thanks for the reply Frank, I've been told that the space saver wheel is not an after purchase option and would have to have the full size 16" wheel. I think it's probably best to wait until I get sight of the car and then decide. Hope I don't need a spare wheel before then! Regards Mike. |

I have the full size 16" steel wheel with a Michelin Energy (now a Continental - long story) 205×55 R16 as a spare, but I also have 16" alloy road wheels. So when I had a puncture, I could continue on at full speed. It all fits neatly in the boot. |

Got the car today. There is only space in the wheel well for a space saver (narrow tyre) There is a moulding that contains (in my view) the pointless compressor with tube of goo, there is the yellow nut cover remover, 2 wheel chocks and the towing eye. There are spaces available for the jack a wheel brace and a space for something else not sure what. If you lift the moulding out there is part of the electronic handbrake system fastened to the bottom of the wheel well. So only room left for the space saver. Regards Mike. |

Hi Mike, Initially wanted to do the same as you, and get a full size wheel in there until I was confronted by the monstrosity of a motor/pump for the electronic handbrake. However I am not averse to having the narrow space-saver instead. I was wondering if you could be kind enough post a picture of yours with the space-saver and accoutrements in place? I have no moulding in mine at all, just the handbrake bumf... When I was in Merthyr Citroen they never mentioned that it was even a possibility that space-saver would fit. | ||||

On the DS4, the electric handbrake will fit under a full wheel. | ||||

To add to what David has said, on the DS4 the electronic handbrake will fit under a full size wheel until 2015 when the boot was altered to give space for an Ad Blue tank after which you can still get a space saver wheel and tyre in. There are sellers on ebay selling space saver wheels at less than Citroen or you can easilly get them from a car breakers at a very much reduced price. I don't know if the ad blue tank has been similarly placed on the 115 airdream reducing your available space. |

My thanks to both David and Deux for the latest responses. Well I went to see the Citroen dealeship/maintenance place in Merthyr and spoke to the parts manager. He took the details of my car and ran it and basically told me that I could not have a space-saver wheel in my car, at least not stowed in the space where the [%*^#@!] electronic handbrake mguffin is....He said that the mechanism could be damaged easily and that one really needs to be careful with it. My choices are to get either a full or a space saver and keep it in the boot. I won't do that so it's that foam [%*^#@!] for me now which was supplied by Evans Halshaw with the car. This has however brought up another issue, the handbook states that there is a wheel there and a kit with a tyre inflation kit and a towing eye - I have neither as there is no wheel and do no plastic storage cover for it in which to store these things. At least none was ever supplied). Now I need to get a towing eye, and they cost nearly £30. So I am not a happy chappie. I wanted a full sized spare wheel and kit, even a space saver and kit would've done and I can have neither. |

Hi FejinWales, I received your original message yesterday but couldn't get onto the website to respond. Tried again today and it worked. I replaced the car many years ago but will try to answer your question. When I originally got the car it came with the canister of goo, the pump to blow it into the tyre and a towing hook. I think that was it. They were in a moulding that sat in the tyre well over the handbrake mechanism. I bought a space saver tyre from my then dealer and a tool kit from ebay. They all fitted above the handbrake quite happily but can't remember if I used the original moulding supplied with the car, that had extra space for missing tools or the normal moulding that fits in the tyre. I think that I have a spare towing hook that you can have. Hope that helps. Regards Mike. |

@ Vexorg That looks perfect TBH and I'm pretty sure looking in mine that the full size will fit so I might go down my friends tyre workshop (Rhondda Tyres) and try a careful experiment with one of the wheels from my car. Though I'm unsure if you have a DS4 or C4 as you mentioned a DS4 previously, (unless they are the same). @ Mike, along with Vexorg's post it is obvious now that I can have one or the other regardless of what the Citroen dealership said. I have a theory about that, they are maybe scared (or very cautious) to give advice to anyone regarding equipment that was not installed or included as standard on the vehicle in question. They will hedge their bets on the side that does not give a customer any reason to come back to them with problems pertaining to any advice they've given. It's also been pointed out to me that there should have been the moulding over the top of the handbrake mechanism with the electrically operated tyre goo thingy, and a towing eye, I had none of these. As I do not need the goo I would still like a towing eye, even though I'll never use it to be towed as I have an automatic (semi-automatic), maybe I will have to tow someone at some point. If I get a space-saver tyre I will also buy the kit and the moulding. Thanks very much for the help and clarification. Now I can go do the experiment and see where I'm at. |

Hi again. I decided to go for the spare space saver. I bought a proper moulding that will go over and protect the handbrake mechanism but when I went to get a space saver wheel I became extremely confused at the sizes. The alloys on my car are 16" wheels with 4 lugs. The tyres are 205/55 16R. But looking at the sizes of the tyres on those space saver wheels that are supposed to be compatible with my car, they are all different. for example one guy has one with a 135/90 R16 and he stated he bought it for a C4 which had 17" wheels. I've also come across people who have said that some of these can only be used on the back. and that space-saver 16 and 17" wheels can even be used on cars that have 18" wheels. None of this makes any sense to me at all. Please help in simple terms.... what space saver wheel can I get that will work on my car and can be used on the back and front? And will of course fit on the genuine moulding in the boot? |
