Well just had my 1.6hdi returned today after having new turbo installed at a cost of €1630. List of things replaced: Turbo Unit, EGR Valve, Exhaust Bracket, Oil Feed, Oil Pick Up, Turbo Return Pipe, Banjo Bolts, Air & Oil Filters, sump was also taken off and cleaned and full service. Mechanic stripped some parts also and cleaned all carbon off, just wondering does this sound like the job was done properly and should I be worried that the same problem should crop up again soon. Really considering selling the car now as I've lost all confidence in it and can't afford a bill of this size anytime again soon. |

Yes, and change the oil on or before 20,000 km/12,500 miles. Failure to thoroughly change the oil on schedule is the usual cause of turbo failure. |

Poor maintenance is usually the cause of turbo problems. These turbo units are fitted to thousands of other make of cars and they all don't blow up. |

Thanks riven, my concern is not the turbo as i've been told they are generally faultless in themselves, I'm just worried that there is some other underlying unidentified problem with the engine which is causing the turbo to blow, also my mechanic has recommended that I have the oil and filters done again in about 1000km just for good measure (if I decide to keep it). | ||||

Sound advice I always flush out the oil ways when changing the oil and after well over 100,000 miles with two DV6s not had any problems. Positive care and not benign neglect is the best prevention. |

Thanks lads, I have decided to hold onto the car and treat it with alot of TLC. Starting to feel a bit more confident about the car given what everyone here is saying, basically now its up to me to get it serviced at regular intervals preferable before its 12500 mile recommended service interval. Again thanks to all for your feedback and assistance | ||||

I've always done services on mine at about 9k ish since it was new. I'd enjoy your car as others have said but would throw in an extra oil change after 2 or 3k has been done - oils cheap | ||||

For anyone else with a blown Turbo: (1.6 or 2.0 HDi) Turbocharger Failure Turbos fail for a reason, usually air or oil related. Here are the main causes of turbocharger failure: Lack of lubricating oil or oil delay; Foreign material or dirt in the lubricating system; Oil break-down; Foreign material in exhaust or air-filtration systems; Material and workmanship Carbonised oil is also a major cause of failure of the turbo Carbon may build up and may block oil feed to turbocharger. This can occur in, but is not limited to the following areas: Filter at engine block In-line filter on oil feed pipe to turbo Oil return pipe from turbo to engine block Internal oil galleries inside the engine block Ensure you check all other areas for signs of carbon build up/ blockages. We strongly recommend that you find and rectify the reason why your old turbocharger failed before installing the new one. The following important parts MUST be changed : Oil feed pipe, air filter, oil filter, banjo bolts & washers, drain pipe, the sump removed and cleaned along with the oil pump pickup strainer.
