Hello and thanks for reading...

I have not had a problem with the brakes on my 2004 C4 Coupe 2.0 HDI but thought I better have the brakes and pads changed as I had bought it recently second hand.

All four brake discs and all pads were replaced with new.

It turned out that the rear brake callipers had frozen so they had to be replaced as well.

Since this work was done there has been a few instances of failure:
- Normally within five minutes of starting the car (but not necessarily cold).
- Brake pedal stiffens but does not go to the floor (ergo not master cylinder?).
- The brake pedal stiffens as you pump it but the brakes still don't work.
- If I wait a second then pump them again the brakes come back on.
- Seems to be happening about once a week.
- The garage bled the brakes when the work was done, and again last week (still doing it).

I've asked the garage to look into it but they haven't had anything useful as of yet.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Do the garage you used have access to Lexia/Diagbox (Citroen Diagnosis system) to open the ports on the ABS block to bleed the brakes properly?

Oh, I doubt it - they're a simple garage.

I'll ask.

You think that could cause it?

Yes.

Unless the servo is faulty.

Update:

I had a Bosch place do the bleeding. They think it has done the trick and I'll update here if it hasn't in a week or so (as it only happened once a week).

I did come to them with an additional complaint. I was getting a strange moaning sound in the morning from the rear. Turns out the first garage (won't be going back to them as they've cost me 108 in repairing their mistakes) didn't knock down the lock on the bolts holding the rear discs with bearing in. So they'd come loose.

Not good and a place you are right to avoid

Wow! Could have been nasty.
