Have had car in for annoying noise from front suspension at slow speeds, normally when turning corners to Citroen dealers in St Helens a number of times but they never resolved. While checking car over before a weekend away in Lakes last Friday I grabbed front wheels and shook violently the car left right (God knows what the neighbours thought I was doing)... ha har the noise !!! I traced it to, nothing to do with the suspension, it was the rubber grommets on the air filter perished. For now I have just wedged it to stop rattling. Hope this might help someone else that may have a annoying noise |

It is strange how sound can travel through a car and be caused by something one wouldn't expect.

Must check under my bonnet as I have a rattle as well, brought it to my mechanic & he checked everything underneath & couldn't find anything wrong. I was starting to think I was hearing things, but he took it for a spin & heard the noise too. |

I can hear rattling only at speeds over 65Mph, to which the dealer said, sorry we cannot replicate on that speed but we will look under the car for any problem. As you said it could be something completely unrelated. I am taking the car for recall service tomorrow and will give them your findings. It is a rattle from the front passenger side only when i go over 65mph. Very odd for 64 Reg car

At that age I would doubt the rubber grommets have perished abou?

I agree with you polestarboy but I will point it out may be it is around it somewhere, never. The car is very quiet on the motorway all i can hear is the rattle noise and consistent with speed so either vibrations or air going through gaps.

I've been having a rattle from my front suspension and a noise developed when steering. It turned out to be the strut top nuts on my replacement KYB front dampers that I'd fitted last year. They were too tall. I swapped them out with some genuine ones from the dealer (£2.40 for a pair) which were half the height. It has transformed the front suspension and the steering noise has now gone. They can be swapped out in situ because the weight of the car will keep the springs compressed.

Just thought I'd do an update. I still had a rattle so I investigated further. I checked the strut tops and they were fine. Somebody suggested checking the D bushes on the front anti roll bar so I took a look and found out that one of the ball joints on one of the drop links have excessive play so I replaced both dop links and it has fixed the problem. |

Further to this, the recent MoT picked up a worn front nearside bottom ball joint. I felt that it wasn't still quite 100% even after I'd replaced the front drop links. It has improved things. Just this pesky rear air suspension issue to resolve. EDIT: It was my strut tops. I reseated them and made sure the nuts were wound down all the way. No more rattle! |

This has come back to haunt me. I had to replace the front springs for the last MoT and I noticed that the strut tops were past their prime. I didn't have time to replace them as I needed to take the car back for the retest. The rattle came back so I ordered a pair of strut tops from Euro Car Parts. They were the wrong ones and the current lockdown means I can't return them yet and I'm absolutely loath to try order elsewhere and have the same problem again. I can't order genuine parts until the dealer is open again. Fortunately, my cordless impact wrench makes short work of this job. |

I too have an issue with suspension knocks and rattles when going over rough road, large bumps are not noisy only rough road, I have replaced both drop links and bottom ball joints, tightened the top mounting nuts but the noise is still there. Is there something that I should try next as opposed to randomly replacing suspension components?
