Hi
Anyone tow a caravan with a GP 1.6HDi Exclusive with EGS 08?

Been to the caravan place today only to find out I can't appear to be able to tow anything much. Just wondering if anyone does and what they actually tow caravan wise.

Your problem is the maximum braked weight of the trailer v the gross train weight and the braked trailer weight is 1180kg (from what I can see in the specs - Click Here - which is a fairly lightweight caravan you need.

Forget what anyone says 'they' tow, exceed the weights and get stopped and it's a big fine........

Yeah definately dont want to break the law or cause problems etc but for a vehicle that is so big, the weight it can pull is so small. Very wierd and wondering why or if its a mistake somewhere

The manual gearbox with the same engine is rated at 1300kg, it's not a mistake but must relate to the strength of the clutch and/ or gearing as the EGS has different ratio's.

Depending on what sort of van you are looking for there should still be plenty of options with 1180kg.

Hmmm - just checked my 1.6HDi EGS 5 door saloon and it says 3100 gross with 1300 max braked trailer weight. My caravan is a 2 berth 15' Bailey Discovery Manta with a max gross of 1000kg so I am inside the allowed weights but it surprises me that the GP is so low. I suppose as Dave says, both have the same running gear so the car is heavier reducing the towing limit to get inside max train weight.

The car is plated with the maximum weights. From the Official Citroen Doc here: - Click Here -

These are the Maximum weights for the C4GP Diesels:

Please Note: weights for other variants do vary and the specifivcations for the 5 and 7 seat Picasso's are here: - Click Here -

There should also be a sticker on your car giving the maximum weights. Open the front passenger door and look around the seals on the car body - it's probably there somewhere.

OK, so does this mean that I need to be looking for a caravan that weighs up to 1180 empty and then I have to carry all my stuff in the car?

Just a bit confused by the 1050 and the 1180 figures.

You also need to look at the 'Gross Train Weight' which is the car + the caravan + passengers and luggage as a maximum.

This is one reason I went for the 2.0 HDi It gave me more options when the time came to upgrade my caravan.

Hi, I have the Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6HDI with EAT gearbox, Ive looked into towing and yes limited to size due to weight issues as mentioned here, however there are a few caravans that can be towed, even 4/5 berth ones, these choices are limited to the Venus range of caravans and Xplore, these are modern very lightweight caravans.

The OP has a first generation 1.6HDi EGS which has a GVW of 2250kg and GTW of 3130kg - this means that it is limited to 880kg if the full payload of the car is used, although up to 300kg can be traded for towing.

This is a common issue with Citroën (and Peugeot) models, you cannot rely on the information in the brochure alone the technical information needs checking - our old DS4 could tow 1550kg but this dropped to 1350kg at full payload, not an issue for us (the van is 1229kg MTPLM) but there are plenty of people who get caught out with this especially as some gearboxes see a reduction.
