Hi guys,

I have a 57 plate 1.6HDi VTR+ and it's been great for the last 3 months we have had it except a depollution sensor recently went and has been replaced yesterday. The car was fine on the way back from collecting it and that's 30 miles from home, Today when I drove it there's a knocking sound coming from around the front wheels area of the engine when I accelerate or brake, it knocks once or a few times depending on speed and how fast I accelerate but it only makes this noise when I'm in gear, it won't make the noise if I just roll and brake.

I have called the garage to see if anything else was done to the car or if a tool could have been left behind and is rattling about as it sounds like something metal tapping a compressor, like a hollow sounding knock on metal but he assures me nothing has.

Any ideas before I visit a garage?

Just took it to a French car specialist and he thinks the main engine mount has gone which would explain the judder when trying to drive below 5mph. Back to the garage it goes

I would be surprised if it was an engine mount, I would have expected it to be a worn suspension bush or roll bar end issue may be even a broken exhaust mount.

Does it or did it nake the noise when stationary, revving the engine?

Have you had it fixed yet?

Engine mounts are remarkably tough but sometimes easy to break, it could be due fatigue of the rubber insulation between the two outer mounts.
Have you got any speed bumps or badly potholed streets around yours as they can cause premature failing of a mount if driven over constantly?

I took it to get the engine mount looked at and the drivers side had gone completely apparently but it never fixed the noise. I took it to another garage who had it on ramps and said all he could see was a loose brake pad so I had those changed and it was ok for a few hours but it's back again, some bushes had split around the wheel area so need to get them done next. Hopefully that will do it

Been to a couple of place since my last post and one place said it was loose brake pads in the front offside so I got them changed and they are still loose but that's not causing the noise as the garage thought.

Took it to another another Citroen specialist and he reckons it's the torsion or torque bar??? He wont know for sure till it's up on the ramps next Thursday, The noise is pretty bad now and does it when you start accelerating and braking

He also thinks the juddering at low speeds and reversing is the clutch, needs replacing he's charging me £30 at my request to try recalibrating/resetting the gearbox/clutch before I spend a fortune replacing the whole lot.

Getting fed up now, I had a banger V plate zafira that I got rid of for this car as I wanted a newer car that would give me less hassle with things breaking and this has turned out worse.....hardly had any issues with the zafira

£30 for a clutch recal is a good price and should as in 99% of cases cure the low speed judder.

Are your front tyres wearing evenly? if you break heavy does the car maintain a straight line? if not also check your wish bone arms.

But still most likely to be something like a roll bar issue.

I take it in tomorrow to get done so we'll see, The wheel does wobble slightly under braking but nothing major and the tyres wear evenly on the front.

did you ever resolve this, it sounds just like my issue now. mech has checked replaced anti roll as slightly worn but no different and now thinks after banging pushing and pulling everything it might be a worn drive shaft. only makes noise on bumpy road or the markings as you approach roundabouts no different if your asking it to drive or coast.
