Depollution System Failure - Is it really urgent

A light has come on saying that the depollution system has failed and the manual says take it to be serviced urgently.

I have done some research and somebody recommended taking it for a long drive on the motorway if it has been doing lots of short journeys - it has.

I understand the light only indicates that a sensor has spotted something different and that a multitude of things may have gone wrong.

However it is a bank holiday Tuesday and my wife would like to take the car away for a week rather than our old banger of a second car.

Are any of the multitude of possible problems really urgent? How often does this light indicate a problem with too many short journeys?

Thanks for any advice.

Get it on the motorway, and give it some high revs, this gets the exhaust nice and hot and burns off all the crud in the exhaust if you have a Diesel.

If whilst you're travelling to the motorway you feel the car's not right, avoid the motorway and take it back home as it's the best bet - especially with garages being closed today due to bank hol.

Thanks Biohead,

Could you confirm exactly what you mean by high revs.
Are we talking 4000, 5000, 6000? And for one minute, two minutes, three minutes?

Do you happen to know if the warning light is constantly testing - will it go out as soon as the problem is fixed?

Are we at risk of doing damage to the car or just the environment?

Many thanks,

Hi there

This happened to me and I was advised to take it right to a Citroen garage which I did and they replaced my diesel particle filter.

Was advised not to drive the car.

My car had went into limp mode and had an engine management light on.

Hope this helps.

I have the issue curently on mine, 1.6HDi 90 with no dpfs. Came on more frequently with the remap but as has been said a bomb down the motorway at 2k+ and it rights itself. Hope it helps.

All Citroen service centres busy so RAC have come out to have a look!

They find that the error is P0470 Exhaust Pressure Sensor Malfunction. He's out there now trying to find the particular sensor

RAC man did a lot of research including reading the information sent by C40wners.org - thanks everyone and talking to the local Citroen garage and in the end we just cleared the warning and took it for a test drive and it has been fine. No loss of power at all.

Now just waiting to see if it comes back on.

Thanks again,
