What size of tyres is everyone using on their 17" VTS+ alloys? I have 50mm atm and they look far to big. Has anyone went a low as 35mm

If you have standard 17 alloys, the two tyre sizes used on here are commonly 205-50 and 215-45. Both are approximately equal in terms of rolling radius. The 2nd number on the tyre (50) is the size of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. So the standard sidewall size is 102.5mm. I'm not certain, but I think they are the only two which fit the standard 17inch alloys. You want lower profile tyres you'll have to buy new wheels for them. |

It would knock the speedo out in a big way going 35. The 50 is not a measurement in mm. But a percentage of the tyres width. In this case 50% of 205mm. The standard wheel width stops you from running much wider than 215 so you ideally need to change wheels. Although going for a lower profile will not always give you better handling or grip. It will give you a harsher ride though. (edit)Scott posted before me. |

It will also be more prone to pothole damage.

So going for a 40 tyre is not a great idea then? I was hoping to get the car sitting a bit lower without the risk of rubbing.

It won't lower the car - 40 means the sidewall is 40% of the tyre width, and the overall diameter will be almost the same. The ride will probably be much harder though. Yea I know it won't lower the car but it will let me go lower on my coilovers without rubbing.

If you want 40 profile tyres, your best bet is 225×40 on 18" wheels. Decent Michelin Pilot Sport 3 225×40 R18s are around £150 each fitted, and a set of good looking 18" alloys is around £500, so with a bit of luck, you could have the lot for under a grand or say €1,250. |
