Glad you got it sorted although the cost must be hard to stomach Dixter wrote ... ...One thing which has gone is the quiet 'fluttering' noise from behind the dash when under wide throttle openings. The car had been making this noise for ages (ie for the last couple of years) and I put it down to the slight vibration of the engine, when under load, causing a slight rattle behind the dash. I'm now wondering if this was a noise from the leaking injector as the flutter, thinking about it now, would increase in speed in relation to engine rpm. I hope it's not related as ours does this when under load in the mid-range too - always assumed it's the wastegate doing its thing

I did mention this noise at a service ages ago, with the car well within warranty, but was informed that 'nothing seemed wrong'. Trouble is, if the noise was in fact the leaky injector (and the report on our car blamed the injector for our turbo's demise) then it'd be our word against theirs if I decided to take things further ie I wouldn't have a cat in hell's chance of getting anything off Citroen in terms of compensation. |

For a month or three mine has been oozing oily residue from the top rh side of the rocker cover breather pipe which appears connected to the turbo, in addition to speckles of soot around said turbo. Not giving any trouble yet. But should I be iminantly worried?? I suspect local dealer used wrong oil at last service 6k ago. Is there any preventative measures I could take. Cleaning hoses etc or is it too late for that?? |

Progress report, 11 months (10k miles) after our turbo went u/s. Car runs really well, just a faint whistle from the turbo when under load but it's always done that since the car was new. Oil consumption is negligible and fuel consumption averages around 47-50mpg which we can't complain about as the car only does fairly short journeys (I now take the out once a week for a good caning though to keep the DPF happy). We've had to have 2 further injector leaks sorted though - at our expense - which is bad form. Apparently these weren't the same ones as those which partly caused the turbo failure. Ain't that always the case! The sad part though is that with the turbo's warranty running out in early November, we've decided to part-ex the car for something else. We'll miss its practicality, space, comfort and general usefulness but my paranoia about further mechanical failures has made me cry enough. A shame as this is the 4th new Citroen we've owned (AX Echo, C2, C5 Estate and now the Picasso) and the only one which has caused us any trouble. The first 3 were nigh on bombproof. |

Hello, Found interesting document about turbo failures on 1.6HDi engines. More or less, same things already mentioned on this forum, but with lot of pictures. See document at: - Click Here - BR |

Serviced by a main franchised dealer 2 times from new, at every 30,000 miles approx , and 3 times by an independent garage 3 times in total, every 15,000 miles. It should be serviced every 12,500 miles (20K km) as per the very specific instructions - Click Here - , so why I am not surprised there's problems? |

I have now encountered a similar issue. Brought my 57 C4GP 1.6HDi exclusive from an independant garage, full Citroen Service history and only 55k, ive done 6k in it and its been a fabulous car. Suddenly encounter loss of power, no warning lights but stop and notice turbo is very hot and black powder around casing. Car went into limp mode, so i had it towed to main dealer where diagnosis said turbo failure due to oil interruption - replacement £2500. 5* warranty brought with car refused to cover it as deemed misuse or wear and tear. Claimed with Citroen UK and although past 5 years they agreed to replace turbo FOC but on review of engine first. Technical report returned a fault with the engine and Citroen UK tell me i require a new engine aswell as turbo at a cost of £7500 and Citroen would only give me £2000 towards repair or £1000 towards a brand new Citroen ! Tech report from main dealer stated :- "Traced to faulty turbo, play in the bearing system, contact between the wheels and casings. No amalgamation on injectors, all tight, no foreign bodies in airline, oil in conformity but is looking old, oil pick-up guaze within tolerance" - "Solution - after looking at photo's tech suggest replace the engine and the turbo" Citroen have confirmed that car was maintained to correct standard but has stated that if turbo is replaced without the engine then the likelyhood is that the new turbo could fail immediately but Citroen are unable to provide me with a report that states why or what is wrong with the engine. I now have a car that i brought 1 year ago for £8k which is parked in storage undriveable as i cannot afford to repair it/ replace engine and turbo ! |

Dixter wrote ... Looks like the blower on our '08 C4P has thrown in the towel - driving home from Leicester on thursday afternoon the car faltered a couple of times, then picked up for half a mile or so, then would only give us 40mph on the flat. Couldn't really stop so I nursed the car into Melton Mowbray, during which time the De-pollution warning flashed up, along with the hill-brake (auto hold thingy) warning and ' ESP' unavailable. RAC arrived on the scene where fault codes for EGR and EDR* showed up on the computer. On thinking it was just the EGR valve I wasn't too worried but there is a rather worrying noise from around the turbocharger which rises and faills according to engine revs. It also rattles at idle which it didn't before. There's also a bit of soot around the turbo's housing. Car's done around 50k miles and is about 4 months out of warranty. Hopefully getting the car towed up to Lincoln Citroen on monday - I'm reluctant to take the car to an independent garage simply because they may not understand the full procedure for replacing the turbo, replacing gauzes/cleaning etc. For a bit of peace of mind, does the above pretty much sound like a failed turbo? Apologies for a cry for help on my first posting, although I have done a good search around what looks like a fabulous forum and source of info. Thanks. *Can't remember if it was EDR - the RAC guy was a bit baffled as not seen that one before. Familiar with EGR though. I got the exact same warnings on my Grand C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi after it went into limp mode just two days after I bought it! Its a 2007 VTR+ model with a genuine 64,000 miles on the clock...Picked with up from a dealer on Autotrader for £4700. I took it back to the dealer and on the way the electronic handbrake locked on for a few minutes and refused to release itself whilst I was stuck very in heavy traffic at the major intersection of the A40 and the A406 (Hanger Lane roundabout) in London. Switched the engine off and on a few times and eventually it released itself. After leaving the car at the dealers for a couple of days for a diagnosis of the fault I called them and they said that the turbo has gone awol. Before I bought the car I spoke to a local Citroen mechanic who told me that 1.6 HDi's eat turbos for breakfast, so this news wasn't really surprising to me. The same mechanic has now told me that simply changing the turbo and the oil wont be sufficient...You also have to change the oil pick-up filter in the sump (Blockages of which is what leads to 99% of Turbo lubrication failures in the first place)...Failure to replace the latter as well can result in the new turbo failing after only a week! |

The HDi's turbo is excellent and failures are due to not using the correct oil, not using OEM filters and not changing the oil on or before schedule. The oil change must also be VERY thorough, and Citroën issued a tech doc explaining the exact procedure. - Click Here - Turbo longevity is a consequence of care, not neglect, which is what your mechanic sees leading him to conclude they're unreliable. |

Hi, mew22v, why don't you do like I did, I got a low mileage, secondhand engine and get it installed, should only cost about £1000 parts and labour. I had to do that when one of my injectors 'dropped' and two where snapped in the head when they where tried to be removed to find out which one dropped. Hope this idea helps you. | ||
