Finally picked up my automatic. I think I like everything about the automatic especially in start-stop traffic where I don't have to worry about the clutch. However, there is one thing I am not completely sure of. The car accelerates a bit if you take the foot off the brake, which is fine as this stops it rolling back. However, if I am sitting at the lights, as far as I can tell, if I lift the handbrake up, I can't lift my foot off the main brake as this would strain the handbreak as the car applies acceleration. So the only thing to do is put the car into Neutral or Park, but moving an automatic's stick takes some getting used to especially as you might put it into reverse if you're not careful. Am I missing something here? Thanks. |

Sounds as though you want to read the section in the handbook referring to this> To engage the holding aspect you have to use the brake to stop!

If you haven't got your foot on the accelerator then the car can't accelerate, it will only be on tickover (around 750 revs) & it will only creep forward, firmly applying the handbrake will hold it, if it doesn't then there's something wrong with the handbrake, or the tickover is too high, with a full auto box you shouldn't have to put it into P or N, once i put mine in drive that's where it stays until i either go into reverse or switch the engine off.

Thanks. The handbrake does hold, but I just need to get used to it. Because the car does tickover as you say, it does appear to apply strain to the handbrake. But if it's not a great deal, that's great. The automatic gearbox doesn't seem to be the type for constantly putting the car between drive and neutral without knackering it.

Haha you brits aren't used to automatics. Here in Oz most cars are, if it's a full auto ie not a EGS it's pretty straightforward you put your foot on the brake when waiting in traffic you don't need to put into neutral (N) or park (P). If you lift your foot of the brake and you're in drive (D) and on a flat piece of ground no accelerator will make the car creep forward a little. [%*^#@!] easy driving these in traffic we got a nissan x-trail auto.

Yup, and the Toyota I hired in Sydney had the handbrake where the clutch should be! |

The 'creep' when stationary but in drive is quite pronounced on my diesel automatic. The hand brake does need a good tug on to hold the car. That took some getting used to when I first got it. I used to put it in neutral. Not keen on holding it on the foot brake for too long especially at night. Dazzles the driver behind. In fact that is the downside of the 'stop start' system in the new C4. The need to hold in on the brake. If I could suggest a refinement to Citroen, the brake lights could extinguish after 10 seconds even though the foot is still applied. Regards Mike |
