hi, i was just trying to get the EGR valve out, when i thought i may as well do the glow plugs while i'm there(144,000 on clock)first one was ok, but the second one took ages to get out and when i got the new one in, i think i over tightened the plug and it seems to 'wobble' and just carrys on turning.

Have i knackered the thread in the block and is there any way of repairing it, help

Ahh the old adage springs to mind: 'keep on fixing it until it's broke'

Just because the car has 144,000 on the clock doesn't mean the glow plugs have failed and need changing and from the sound of your explanation things could get expensive.

Will the glow plug come back out?

Have you simply snapped it (hopefully) and it can be replaced again?

hi and thanks for reply, i don't know what type they are, they just have a wire screwed onto the end, if that helps.

i've tried to get it out, it just seems to turn and 'wobble'

i've just thought, if i do get it out, could i use a 'locking compound' to seal it in?

have i gone past the thread, do you reckon and if i get it back onto it, will it be ok?

Very much doubt that you have 'gone past the thread'

Before making any decision on what to do you need to get the damaged one out first, and that's looking more like you need to take the cylinder head off I'm afraid.

Can't be certain though as I don't have access to a car with that engine any more.

hi, i think i've snapped it at the 'neck',but the wire from top to the 'nipple' is still joined, thats why it's turning but not coming away.so i think i'll just put it into place(can feel where it's broke off and put exhaust putty round it, that'll keep it from moving and if it needs to 'warm up' in winter it should work the way it does.

That really isn't a 'bodge' solution that I would want to go for on any car of mine I'm afraid and you should give careful consideration to getting it fixed properly.

i wish i could Dave but money is not one of my strong points.i was wondering about using them reverse drill bits, drill down the centre and heat the block with a torch, to see if it will come out that way first.the head removal would be the last resort.

I've got the EGR valve off and i did'nt have to remove all the parts that was said in the print out, i'll take photo's of the way i did it.

Problem with drilling down is if you go through the plug and drop swarf into the cylinder, how will you get it out.

You can try using an 'easyout' tool but need tobe very careful.

you don't drill right through, just enough to get the reversed bit to bite and the plug to start turning anti-clockwise and come out.my dad cross threaded his spark plug once, he used a tap and die bit, with loads of grease on it, so the metal didn't drop into the cylinder.

Without knowing exactly how far down it's broke off though, how are you going to know when to stop?

I've installed the new EGR, took it for a test drive last night and all is fine.

Now i emailed Burnout, why his EGR was different on the print out, he made available to us, on the 28th june.He said his EGR was for a 2.0ltr hdi, mine was for a 1.6hdi.

He also has said that it now has to be programmed to the car, with the lexia.Has anyone in the Merseyside area got a lexia and could they do it for me, i would be very grateful

Hi again, here are some of the photos I took whilst removing and installing my new EGR valve,

1) Remove the engine cover, the air intake pipes, the turbo pipe and the air filter (after you've taken off the 'scuttle' at the bottom of the windscreen, undo the two screws holding the brake fluid, then the plastic membrane across the car, one bolt on passenger side and the drivers side clips out).

2) You then can see the fuel filter, in the centre of the picture, unclip it on the left side of it, lift up and push to one side (don't forget to unclip the wiring from it)

3) I then removed the metal plate, which supports the fuel filter, just three bolts onto the side of the head and you've got a good view of the EGR (the white spot in the centre of picture)

4) The EGR has just two bolts at the back, which are a bit awkward to get at.i unclipped the bracket, keeping the EGR and the cooler together (used a pointed centre punch, put it into the clip joint, which reminds me of a exhaust jointing clamp, it then just 'springs' apart) The bracket is a bit fidgety to get back together, you might have the right tool, or like me, a nail pincer.

5) Everything now reinstalled and that should be it.The EGR in the picture is for a 1.6hdi, i looked at the pictures 'Burnout' put on the forum, his is for a 2.0ltr EGR.
