I was just about to write something similar to Dave, though I agree, running out of fuel is never a good idea.

There are faulty fuel sensors. I know of one C4 petrol 2008 that when it showed fuel low the engine cut out. so refuel when you go under 1\4 of the tank.

I guess it depends on the car, all 3 of my C4's I have been able to drive for a good few miles on ---.

Never put more than 57 litres in on a fill up in the 180 either.

I got 62 litres in once - there can't have been much left in the tank.

Guessing you had topped it right up to the pipe to get 62 litres in. The tank is only supposed to be 60 litres.

As the gauge reading is guided by your driving style I decided to take the fuel a bit lower. It went down to approx 50 miles left then on my way home from work this morning I filled up the car to the brim. It cost £85, but according to the fuel display I have potentially 820 miles worth of fuel in the tank.

Probably, but I suspect the tank is marginally bigger than 60 litres, to ensure that there's still fuel in it when it reads empty.

When my C4 says "fuel level too low" I can put 52 litres in. If the tank is 60l there is still 8l+ the pipe left at that point. Estimation is usually 150-170km left and the trip reading is 900+km. Haven't tried to run it to ---.

The 60litres could also be nominal to take into account expansion of the fuel...

Just out of curiosity...I'm just wondering if there are different tanks noting the variation in filling capacities...?

I would say not but you never know!

I don't think so Rich but you hit the nail on the head when you said 'nominal'.

60 litres is the stated capacity but it may be in practice, a bit more.

That's correct - Citroën say the warning comes on with 7 litres left in the tank.

hi,what does everyone think is the most you can get mpg in a 1.6hdi.i thought it would be about 64mpg,but whilst i was driving up to Fort William,Scotland,i thought i'd drive at about 56mph.The first photo i could not believe, but the second one was outstanding.
I also let the tank go down to 20 miles to go,before i filled up with £80 at Tesco.

The highest it will go I think is 999 mpg going down hill not pressing the gas.

Allowing for the fact the trip computer may err on the generous side, those figures are not unusual. However, for really solid figures the distance covered needs to be at least a couple of thousand miles.

A similar engined 1.6HDi Peugeot recently did a verified 126 mpg over 3,700 miles. - Click Here -

I experimented with fuel economy a few months ago - - Click Here -

My trip computer has been hovering around the 68.8/70.5mpg for a few weeks with the warmer weather; it'll go down a bit now that the average speed cameras are off the M80 and the speed limit is back to 70mph.

68.8 / 70.5 on my trip computer actually equates to a real 58/59mpg.
