To that end, BigJohnD - and others - are Dealers/Forecourt garages more interested in turning a car around from arrival to departure as quick as possible? Just wondering if I may be able to get a bit more off buy persuasion to take it out of their way!

Also, am I better off with cash in my hand or paying by Debit card?

Well, yes, shifting cars quickly is what they want.

As for cash v debit card, you'll find most dealers will not take cash over a fairly low limit, maybe £250. It's to do with money laundering. - Click Here - They love debit cards - it's all but charge free, completed in a minute or two, and once the transaction is complete, it can't be undo (except in the most extreme circumstances).

Credit cards charge around 2.5%, can be voided after completion and for large sums are weighted in favour of the card-holder!

Hmm... quite obvious in hindsight

Debit card all the way, I have transferred £10K for a car that way, but you may get a phone call during the transaction to confirm your ID from the card handlers.

When I make a large transaction with a debit card, e.g. for car, I just tell the bank first, so there are no surprises.

Good idea, think I might let my bank know!

Was meant to be looking at a car this afternoon, but told it's in their garage at the moment as there is a problem with the ignition (apparently it keeps blowing fuses)... wish I knew what the problem was so I could tell them and get it sorted asap!

I always recommend using a credit card rather than a debit card as, if the car is a dud and the garage won't play ball, you can claim against the credit card company. Debit cards MAY give you aftersales support, but not as good as credit card. Of course, they do charge interest, but if you have the money in the bank you can pay it off.

Thanks for the info kipper. My limit is not anywhere near how much I'll be spending, sadly. I will just be very careful in my choice of car and garage!

I agree in principle, but I think you'll find a dealer will not accept a credit card for the balance/full price of a new or used car, for the very reasons you list.

A credit card is fine for service/repair bills.

Okay, so I have a car to look at on Thursday. The garage/car sales place I've found it at said that there was a problem with it starting/blowing fuses. They called me yesterday just to let me know what is going on and said that the starter motor needed to be replaced...

... Anyways, the reason for this post; should I be concerned by a) the fact that it needed replacing, and b) whether the replacement part is genuine Citroen or another brand?

Regards,

Velo.

I think the starter motor problems are often linked to a) oil leak from the air doseur assembly going unrepaired, and also b) main fuse box blowing fuse 1.

I'd personally be doing a bit more checking on both of these points. Wouldn't worry myself if a non Citroen starter motor was being fitted.

Okay, been to look at one tonight I'd like any advice from you guys as I need to decide by 10am as to whether I whack a deposit down on a 1.6 Wicked Red VTR+

Problems.

* A couple of dings and dents, a scratch about 8 inches long and chips on the edge of the passenger door.
* No service history paperwork
* Bubbles on the rear spoiler (which I know is common)
* Two keys, but the main one has no key blade and can't be used to unlock the car using the buttons
* No owners handbook (petty, but that's me!)
* Whole wing mirror assembly on Passenger door is loose (held upright, but can be moved a few mm on it's base against the door)
* The usual dual zone climate control hot/cold problem
* Front near side wheel arch liner loose (does this need removal to change starter motors?)
* Glove box looks okay, not forced, but when open it feels loose on its hinges (is this right?)
* Electro-Chromatic rear view mirror appears very blue in use (daylight, overcast weather)

Good bits!

* Body work in very good condition (just the passenger door looks to have any marks)
* Drives well (from the short 5 minute test drive I had)
* 17" alloys in good condition
* It's wicked red, and it has a spoiler!!

It's up for £3990, on a 55 plate, 6 months MOT and 2 months Tax. I tried to knock money off but they were having none of it! They did say that they will service it, and fix/replace the fob key inclusive of the full screen price.

Basically, am I being too fussy with my problems, and what would you guys do?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for any help in advance!

Velo

Probably not what you want to hear Velo but I'd walk away. From the sound of it it's had somehing of a prang to the passenger door (big scratch, loose mirror and popped wheel liner).

No service history = big no no

Effectively 1 key?

You can, and will get much much better. I paid over the odds, but was worth it to me - £4500 for 05 plate 110 1.6HDi VTR+ with full dealer history, JBL upgrade, front and rear parking sensors and the spoiler. 45000 miles, years MOT and 6 months tax.

Based on this car you have dreamed of, and the car you just described, its worth another 500 quid and another few weeks to find the one?

There's too many suspect issues. Move one and keep searching.

sorry Velo, this one sounds like the one but there sounds to be a lot going on. Buy a cheap and cheerful run around and you have first refusal on mine this time next year! Mine has the 18" wheels too
