I'm a bit disappointed in my recently acquired 1.6hdi C4 hatch as it struggles to return more than 64mpg at a constant 65mph. How can it ever achieve an official Combined cycle of 60mpg? Over the first 2000 miles the average is just over 56mpg - I was expecting at least 63-64mpg. In case you were going to say, "Dream on", as comparison, and to give you an idea of my driving style, my VW Passat 1.9tdi returns 55.5mpg overall (including lots of stop-start and town/short journeys from cold) and about 67mpg at 65mph (official combined figure of around 50mpg). |

The 2006 C4 HDi is never going to achieve the 'official' combined cycle figures via the onboard trip computer which are laboratory condition compiled. 56mpg is a very good average for that particular car especially with 104,000 miles on the speedo If you ever thought it would do 63-64mpg on a combined cycle, then yes you are 'dreaming' I'm afraid Also please read: - Click Here - for more information. |

60mpg is possible, but with over 100K miles on the clock, 55mpg is very good. (That's from my old 110HDi) |

Don't forget that you're going to have to manually calculate it via fill-ups and arithmetic to get the 'true' mpg for both cars: my C4's trip computer is overly-optimistic, while the C-Crosser's (i.e. a Mitsubishi system) is overly pessimistic. My C4's fuel economy (it's a 2005 92bhp SX, 98,000 miles) sits at between 56mpg and 58mpg with two hours a day on the motorway at 70mpg, and, by comparison, if it spends the same journey sitting at roughly 60mph with the odd period at 70mph, will give between 59mpg and 61mpg. When we bought it at 61,000 miles, the previous owner's fuel economy was reading 58.8mpg over 2000 miles, which equates in real terms to approximately 47mpg (indicating short journeys). So, for a five years old car with 100,000+ miles on the clock, I'd say your fuel economy is actually very good. There is a school of thought which says that the official urban figure is a more realistic indicator of real-world fuel economy: look at it that way (47.9mpg for the 92bhp HDi) and you're doing well. |

Sorry, have to disagree. The "laboratory condition" stuff is nonesense - as I say, my Passat (trip agrees with reality) constantly achieves 4.5 to 5.1 mpg better than official combined. I've heard this myth before (along with "56mph is the most efficient speed") and it seems to be regularly repeated. Also the 104,000 miles comment. If anything most cars if they are maintained properly get better consumption as they get older and the engine loosens up. Again, to use my Passat as an example, at 107K it averaged 52.6 overall and now, at 255K it is 2.7mpg better overall. |

Different cars though, you will have to adjust the way you drive them. Might be the Passat suits your driving style more. IE gearing, power band etc. There are guys on here who have got 70+mpg out of the 1.6 HDI. It is all down to driving style. |

Well today i managed to get 54.4 MPG doing a 60 mile trip on the motorway averaging 57 mph which is great news as when i bought the car it was averaging 34mpg but this was due to the many problems and faults with the turbo and DPF which the car had and have now all been fixed. Very happy with those figures |

An old post I know - but I wanted to add my two penneth... I've had a 2.0HDi for a couple of years (and had a 2.4 JTD Alfa 156 before this so there is definitely a pattern; maybe we never learn!). I find that the best economy is at about 40 in sixth. I will get 60+mpg generally, but it won't do hills very well! I find that from there on, economy simply drops away the faster you go. The old thing about 56MPH being the most economic speed isn't true I've found with the HDi. This is not great for a motorway run - the published top economy (61.3 I think) is only achievable as far as I can see at well below motorway speeds. I find the speed limiter helps for economy; it helps to manage the engine and avoid labouring a little better than I can at lower speeds. Bottom line though, as far as I can see, is that the best economy is had by driving like granddad, at the edge of labouring and by annoying other road users! I didn't get a VTS to drive slow! |
