Well I thought its about time we started getting a few figures for the 2.0 HDI, especially as I'm somewhat dissatisfied with mine. (after 8,000 miles)

In normal stop/start town driving I get about 42mpg and it only approaches 50mpg after many miles of motorway cruising. My overall average is about 44-45mpg My previous Xsara 2.0HDI easily managed 50mpg under the same driving conditions.

Is this the price to be paid for the higher performance?

Interesting that the 2.0 hdi is getting those kind of figures as my re maped 1.6 i10 hdi gets better and the performance levels are probably only marginally less when I push it (which is all the time)

The only benefit I can see of a 2.0 is pure torque rather than that the re map adds but not haven driven the2.0 since my demo test drive nearly 3 years ago I'm not really in a position to comment

Maybe I need to 'test' drive a 2.0 again

I know that it can take a wee while for the figures to settle so I'm not too worried just yet.

However, our figures after 1 week are 878 miles at an average of 40.8mpg.

That has been a real mixture of motorway and round town.

Over 4500 miles on the clock now.

Average mpg is 40.3

Last night coming back from West Lothian, with a top box, and a mad cross-winds, she averaged 45.5 mpg.

Not bad for a big oil-burner with the aerodynamics of a brick.

I concur...

my VTS Hdi averages 45ish, even on a run it never approaches 50mpg which is disappointing. I took it to the dealer and they say its normal. I bought it as a workhorse to tramp up and down the motorway and have put 15k on t in 6 months most of it on the motorway, in its little life it has averaged 45.5mpg which includes some long range gentle cruises, never have I seen 50mpg, the best was 48 and that was at a steady 75 in convoy with an old landy that doesn't go any faster

for instance, last night I left Oldham at 9.30pm, straight on the motorway, M62/A1 to Lincoln, cruise at 85 almost all the way - mpg 40.8, home by 11.15

and really its not all that fast, I struugled with an S-max at one point, just got past before a truck arrived in the opposite direction.

overall, it's comfortable and looks good but thats the best you can say for it. before this I had an Alfa 156 estate 2.4 diesel, it was significantly quicker and produced similar economy, better on a run. ahh you will say, "alfas fall apart" but is the C4 any better, next week we are having new seat belts, hatch struts and keys, it idles erratically, squeaks like my granny's zimmer and the boot liner wanders around at will. I've had a new turbo and steering hub, all this withing 36k miles and 3 years

do I like it? - yes, I like to think it has character ... would I have another? - nope

I do get 50+ mpg out of mine, cruising at just over 70 on my runs down to Somerset from London.....if I'm pushing on a bit then it is 42-45 MiNiMUM, and very enjoyable it is too

Simps, as for not being 'that fast', I suppose it does depend on what you're used to, but its got plenty of poke for me in 6th gear.

I too came from a Alfa background several years ago and can say that while the old 'how many of times has that gone wrong?' line no longer is true.....the dealer network was absolutly shocking.

Just piggy backing onto this thread rather than starting a new one.

I have had my C4 Coupe VTS 2.0 HDI for a week and i am pleased to report that i getting 50.3 mpg. This is from my daily commute of 84 miles of which 60 are motorway. I mostly kept the motorway speed around 70. I did have the A/C off so that may have helped?

Also ex Alfa here, i see a pattern.

Out of interest, try with the air con on as with a 2.0HDi the difference should be negligible.

Time flies when you're having fun! I'm amazed to see it's 18 months and 30,000 miles since I started this thread. I have concluded that the aircon makes no difference to economy. It's all down to driving style and road conditions. Best I can achieve is 51-52mpg on a 65mph motorway cruise (doze?). Any sort of spirited driving and especially cold weather and it drops like a stone to 42mpg.

Either way I've had 30,000 trouble free and enjoyable miles and I've no plans to trade it in yet

I managed 49.5 after my first tank full.

On my second tank i have dropped my motorway speed to nearer 65 and i am getting 52.2 now, i'm pretty impressed with these figures.

Does the computer remember the recent driving style after each refill? Just filled up for the third time and it came up 702 miles untill next fillup yet first two times it was 596.

Also since resetting the trip i am averaging 57.6mpg, is this even possible in a 2.0 diesel? If i keep getting increased figures like this i'll be expecting 100 mpg at some point.

The computer checks the driving style (well engine revs and fuel consumed) over a few miles and constantly updates

If you were driving at 30mph for a few miles before filling up then yes the range could be higher

But will soon revert back to what the car thinks your likely to get once your on the move again.

It's only a best 'guesstimate' after all and not to be relied on

I thought we had a Citroën "Presentation" about how the travel computer worked, but I can't find it.

I know it takes "time" from the key being inserted and removed, but it also has a memory and various weightings for calculating the range remaining.
