I'm not exactly a newbie, but next Wednesday, we should have a newbie C4 on the drive.

It's a black 60 plate Berline VTR+ 90HDi manual with 4K on the clock.

Hartwell's in Chester have not only accepted 2 cars as trade-ins, but have given us top prices. The salesman was very complimentary about my C4, saying he expected to see 30+K miles on the the clock, not 80K! Of the optional extras, we're looking at an advance purchase of a warranty including MOT cover for years 4, 5 and 6 for £695 (about £232/per year).

I've got to get a new windscreen fitted on Monday, and then on Wednesday drive to Chester to pick up the new model.

Some good news - there's a keyhole on the driver's door (Hooray!) and there's a USB socket which accepts iPods.

I struggled with the cruise control switches on the test drive - they kept moving with the steering wheel!

Expect some photos on Wednesday!

Nice car, never seen a Berline anywhere.

Whats the 90Hdi like compaired to the 110HDi?

All the best with the new car.

Was curious about that as well, the newer car being heavier than the older one and with less power guessing it suffers in the acceleration.

Let's not go there… but the salesman understood my reluctance about Ford.

When we were at the Ford dealer, the Fords on the forecourt looked so bland. I struggled to tell a Mondeo from a Focus from a Fiasco. My (now dated) C4, just about the only not-Ford there, looked so much more distinctive and classier than anything in the their showroom.

The Ford salesman wouldn't get in the C4 but admitted its seats were so much better than hard perches in the Focus. He was also surprised at the excellent condition of the C4 after 80,000 miles.

Berline = French for saloon car. Sounds better than hatchback!

The loss of 20hp didn't seem noticeable on a 5 mile test drive not exceeding about 50mph. I expect there'll be a difference when trying to overtake at 60+mph, but I'm more impressed by mpg than mph.

Spec includes reversing sensors in stereo, USB and bluetooth.
Good seats and very good headrests.
No auto-wipe or auto-lights, which I'll miss. Wipers still LHD.
Regular A/C instead of climate control, which is acceptable.
Auto-folding mirrors when parking.
Electric windows all round as in the old VTR+
Different radio, yet to be identified, definitely not the usual RD4.
Modified radio/trip computer display.
Speedo &c in front of steering wheel, with info about cruise control &c. Colour can be changed, it was blue today!
Warning lights (e.g. seatbelts) up by courtesy light/mirror.
Rechargeable torch in the boot.
Cruise control &c. on steering wheel, but on the wheel, not fixed on the central boss. Memory for cruise control.
Boot seemed better shape, if not bigger.
Spare wheel, not a can of gunge.
16" "Boston" wheels with (cheaper) 205×55 R16 tyres (i.e. under £100 each for decent Michelins)
Daylight running lights
Two press-button remote locking keys.
MPG on trip computer looked good: 55.3mpg.
£20 for 12 months road tax (to be confirmed) for 110g/km emissions.
I believe the clutch is a conventional single plate (to be confirmed).
Handbrake position a bit odd, probably as for LHD. Need to check that.

Sadly the only choice was black, so Ford had the last laugh.

Barrie, when we get it, I sense a visit to lovely Lancs!

Nice one, BigJohnD - looking forward to hearing about it.

I think you'll be pretty happy with the 90bhp. I had a 110bhp VTR+ until the beginning of last year and, although I do miss the added acceleration, the 90bhp still has plenty of poke and decent torque (I just miss the other goodies). What I'm appreciating more at the moment is the economy.

I'm not surprised that the Ford dealer was impressed by the condition of the C4: they all seem to look tidy into later years. Just this afternoon, one of our neighbours again expressed surprise that my C4 is six years old and 80k+ on the clock.

He said he was expecting one of the doors to be hanging off - obviously he sees to many old Fords!

Will do.

The exterior and interior differ more than I expected, compared to my original 2005 spec.

The gear selected indicator in the rev counter also recommends when you change up to a higher gear, which I also saw in a C3 Picasso.

I'll be phoning Chris Knott tomorrow a.m. for the amended insurance certificate, though I'll probably have Citroën's free 7 day cover as well to ensure I'm insured for the handover period. I hope the premiums are less!
