There have been a few posts with queries regarding oil change intervals on the HDi diesels, normal service versus severe service etc. An economic comparison often brings some persepective:- I've compiled some relative costs based on calculation below. Cost of Lube Oil say £6/ litre 4 litres/ change so £24/ change (ignore filter cost labour etc) for 10,000 mile change interval lube oil is 0.24p /mile Cost of Fuel say 130 p/litre =591.5 p/ Imperial Gallon say long term average consumption is 41 MPG (this is for a 1.6HDi) so cost/mile = 591.5/41 = 14.4 p/mile so the relative cost at 10,000 mile change interval is 1.7% (direct inout costs) with a spreadsheet easy to do what ifs... so changing at 20,000 mile interval, lube oil cost is 0.12p/mile or 0.8%. At 5000 miles lube oil cost is 0.48p/mile or 3% relative cost. Put your own figures into the above calculation. I'll post some more later on lube oil test protocols for diesel lube oils Regards G |

Isn't £24 (2400p) over 10,000 equal to 0.24p per mile? Or about a penny for every 4 miles? And my standard 2.0hdi is at an average 43mpg, so I expect the 1.6 to be into the 50s usually (unless we're talking about the picassos). I'd have thought the cost of oil to be negligible if you think about it. A full fuel tank costs more than a full oil change. And that oil will last as long as you choose. Even at 500 miles to a tank and 5000 mile service, you need 10 tanks at around £700 total. |

Not a critism but... I think the key point to raise here, is regardless of economy the fact is that the HDi are susecptable to their oil changes. For the cost of a replacement Turbo, I guess 24p/mile is ok... |

Biohead, thanks for pointing out typo (calculations eg relative costs as a % are correct). I guess the aim is to demonstrate relative cost: extending lube oil change mileage (or frequency) will save such a small relative amount of direct motoring costs that one should aim to be rational. The 1 penny every 4 miles is a good way to think about this. Or less than 2% of direct costs. If ones wants to use a higher average MPG figure, this will of course make the relative lube oil cost ever so slightly higher. Regards G |

Seen some comparisons on the mini coopers the other day between a cooper 120 VTI and the 1.6 HDi. Keep in mind they are the same engines as our C4. The break even point for them when you do the maths is nearly 100,000 miles!

However if you look at the Citroen deals where servicing is included for fixed prices over so many years the costs for petrol and diesel are the same. So how does that work?

I have had 2 EGR valves replaced on my HDi after 102,000 miles @ £450 a time = £900. If the turbo fails, that's £1000 It's not just about cost though, as diesels are easier to drive as they have more torque so need less gear changing. |

As of 17/8/2023 diesel beside me is 1.46/L. That is £6.64 a gallon. Five litres of oil cost me £24. My 2006 1.6 HDI C4 is displaying 53.4 mpg. At over £6/gallon I can't afford to fill the tank. So unable to do a proper calculation yet. |

My 2.0hdi gets over 50mpg per fill up. It takes 5 litres of oil and is nearer £9 a litre these days. I only ever fill the tank due to the eolys fluid. There's no benefit cost wise in part filling it as you will use the same fuel regardless. |
