I am in the process of buying a 2007 2.0 Auto C4GP with 16000 miles on the clock. On the test drive it jerked away and upward gear changes were hesitant. Reading this thread it appears it is my inexperience that is causing the problems. However, I had a test drive in an identical car and take off and gear changes were smooth.

From this I assume the gear box in the car I am buying is faulty and whether I continue with the purchase depends it being fixed.

Many thanks to the contributors to this thread, I have found it very interesting, even though I am not familiar with some of the terminology.

Welcome to the group! My C4 EGS has a similar mileage and is very smooth on take off and hardly noticeable the rest of the time.
Inexperience should not be a factor, simply put the throttle down a bit and let the car do the rest!

The early 2.0 engines came with 2 different auto type boxes. The EGS and a conventional Automatic, so make sure you compare the right boxes with each other.

If the EGS is very jerky likely just needs a recalibration simply a computer hook up at a Citroen dealer.

Especially when new the gear change a a bit stiff which makes changes slow. When accelerating lift off the throttle slightly at about 2,000 rpm for a quick smooth change.

Thank you all very much for the replies. The salesman I am dealing with is a likeable man but has only been in this particular garage for a few weeks. I do not think he knows too much about the mechanics but he did echo Wozza's conclusion that it is probably a software recalibration. Not for the first time I am learning things all the time and it was news to me that there could be two different gear boxs involved. Unfortunately I do not know when 2.0 engines were introduced so do not know what is considered an early engine.

Hopefully all will be revealed tomorrow when it goes in for servicing. I will let you know the result. Thanks again.

It is easy to tell the difference between them visually

The EGS has on the column shifter R N A M only

Full automatic has the normal P R N D type of arrangement.

Both have paddle shifts though.

Driving wise. The proper auto will creep forward once in gear without having to touch anything. The EGS will require you to push the accelerator to move forward.

Thanks Wozzo, it's so easy when you know how!

We have discussed this elsewhere but in summary the EGS box is a manual box with computerised gear change and clutch control. It does not have a torque converter like an automatic and you need to learn an appropriate driving style. Think serene.

The advantage is that it is more economical than a manual, whereas all automatics are less economicalthan an automatic. (DAF 33/44 excepted).

Went for second test drive today and disappointed that it still has slight jumping when crawling at low speeds.

Mechanics have upgraded software and conclude there is nothing more they can do. As I mentioned earlier I test drove a second car with the same gear box for comparison purposes and it was smooth. Unfortunately it was a diesel, which I am told has a different torque and gives a smoother ride than the 2.0 petrol version I am interested in.

Not sure what to do now but would be interested if any other owners with 2.0 petrol engines experience similar problems.

Hi all, I have just read all the above replies regarding the EGS gearbox.
3 weeks ago I brought a C4 Picasso 2.0 VTR+ S-A 08 plate and I found the auto mode a little lumpy, but now reading the posts I will give the manual a go and use the paddles and it seems to me the gearbox is a manual one with sensor on? Am I right.
Once again thank you for your input and help.
